Taking Woodstock: The Book and Movie

22 March, 2009 (05:40) | Books | By: Leslie

Several Kindleboards members, myself included, are reading Taking Woodstock by Elliot Tiber with Tom Monte.

I first learned about this book about a year ago, when it was announced that it was going into production as a new film from Focus Features. Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain; Lust, Caution) was slated to direct. James Schamus, a frequent collaborator with Lee and co-President of Focus Features, was penning the screenplay.

At the time the movie was announced, the book wasn’t available in a Kindle version. But I kept it on my wishlist and lo and behold, sometime in the past few weeks, it appeared. Click on the cover image to download the sample or buy the book.

Meanwhile, the movie is in post-production with a scheduled release date of August 14, 2009. Cast members include Demetri Martin (as Elliott), Imelda Staunton, Henry Goodman, Liev Schreiber, Emile Hirsch, and Eugene Levy, the latter playing Max Yasgur, owner of the dairy farm where the concert took place. Um, which concert? Woodstock, of course.

An early review on IMDb says the film is “hilarious,” with “everything you could possibly want in a movie.” Given the subject, I assume that means there will be lots of rock ‘n roll, along with some sex and drugs—yes, I am old enough to remember Woodstock although I wasn’t quite old enough to go. My cousin was there, though.

The book is entertaining and I am looking forward to seeing the movie this summer. Join us at Kindleboards where I am sure many members will be talking about the book and movie in the months ahead.
