We’re seeing more user reviews of the Kindle 2, and it’s interesting to read about the display differences between the first- and second-generation Kindle readers.

The Kindle 2 renders images in 16 shades of grey, versus the 4 shades of grey in the original Kindle. This translates to a notable improvement in the quality of photographs and other images.

Some Kindle 2 owners have noticed less contrast in the Kindle 2 display. Kindleboards member ArtsAndHistoryFan notes that this may be because of the increased grey-shade level in Kindle 2. We have also heard that there may be some variation in the contrast of different Kindle 2s, including one report from a person who described seeing a significant difference in the display quality of two recently-purchased Kindle 2s.

AAHF has posted a gallery of side-by-side images of her old and new Kindles, showing the screen displays for books, magazines, and web browsing. It’s a good pictorial that contrasts the capabilities of the two displays.
