I just got a kindle touch the other day and I'm having charging issues with it. The first time I plugged it into my computer and let it charge overnight. When I got up it was still amber and had not charged at all. I assumed that might be because my computer possibly went into hibernate mode although I don't really think so as it hadn't charged at all and my computer doesn't hibernate for hours. I then plugged it into the wall charger and it charged fine. I did unplug it before it was fully charged though, it still had a sliver left to go. The light was green though. Then last night before bed I plugged it in to the wall to charge it. It wasn't low, but I figured I'd give it a full proper charge. Woke up this morning and the light was still amber and it hadn't charged. Any ideas? Could it be defective? Is there something I'm missing?

Mine used to do that some time ago. What I would do is to plug it in before I went to bed and when I got up to go to the bathroom , typically three hours latter, if I saw an amber light I would pull out the charging plug then put it back in again and I would go to sleep once more. When I woke in the morning everything was fine.

Thank you for replying. That's interesting. I have a feeling mine would do the same as the one time it didn't charge, then when I tried again, it did. It's almost like it doesn't always engage or something. I've been doing some research and it seems the kindle touch is something of a fussy charger for some. I just did a restart too and I'm charging it now to test it and the green light went on. I guess I'll just see how it goes. I just wanted to know if people thought it might be defective. Thanks again for your reply.

ok this is weird the light turned green and stayed green for awhile (I still had it in charging) and then suddenly it turned amber. I then unplugged it and plugged it back in and it turned green after a few seconds. Has anyone had their kindle touch charging light go from green to amber while charging?

Are you charging it by attaching it to a computer or by using a wall adaptor?

The wall adapter the last few times. I only used the computer the first time. I think I may see the problem. The plug on my touch may be defective. Here's a photo of it plugged in all the way. You can see the prong is still showing. It simply doesn't go in all the way like it does on my fire and kindle keyboard. I have tried three different micro plugs, they all fit the same. I assume everyone else's plug goes in fully? I had never turned it around to check and look at the back side of it before, from the front it appears to be in all the way. A bit odd. Is anyone else's like this? Is it safe to assume this is likely the problem, that it's not getting a proper connection?

Actually the back is slanted/carved in so I guess you have to see more of the silver prongs due to the design so maybe that isn't the issue.

Yes, my Touch does the same thing! I usually plug it into the wall before going to bed. Sometimes when I get up in the middle of the night I will see that the light is green, but I won't take the time to unplug it then. Then later I will see that the light has gone back to amber. Leave it in a while longer and the light goes back to green. Not sure why it does this but when I unplug it in the morning it is fully charged so I assume all is well.

Huh how strange... I wonder how many other people's does the same. I have mine charging at the moment and it just did the green to amber thing again. I don't know what to make of it really and if I should exchange it or not. I'm going to leave it charging for awhile longer and see if it's fully charged when I unplug it.

I had the same thing happen a few days ago. I saw the light had changed to green, but I was in the middle of something and didn't rush to unplug the KT from the wall adaptor. I came back later on and the light had changed back to amber. I didn't think of it as a big deal. I figured from now on I would just try to unplug it earlier before it did that. I thought maybe it was set up to start using some of the power to avoid overcharging. (No basis for this thought whatsoever, just pure speculation on my part.)
Personally, I cringe when people say they plug their electronic devices in and go to sleep and let them charge overnight. Although not common, there have been incidents of these things catching fire. I'll only plug mine in when I can check them reasonally frequently.

FWIW I've never heard what I consider a reliable report of a Kindle catching fire from being plugged in over night. So if it's nearly dead at bedtime, I have no problem plugging it in to charge while I sleep. As to the green light/amber light issue. . . .the thing is that the device is designed stop charging when it gets to 100 (some report it actually turns green at some slightly lower percentage). If it's still on the charger, it won't actually be charging unless it drops enough that the charge cycle is triggered again -- like if WiFi is on and a book downloads and it sets to indexing it. When that happens, you might see that it is now amber when it had been green before!

I always leave my fire to charge overnight. I'm not concerned about it catching fire. I've never heard of that happening actually.
As far as the light changing colors, that's interesting, Ann. My kindle keyboard and fire respond differently. They go green and stay green when finished.
One concern I have is that my touch doesn't seem to want to charge completely. There still seems to be a wee tiny bit left to go when I look at the battery icon. I'll see when I get home if it's full. I left it charging.

Charging Lithium Ion batteries is complex and different from lead acid batteries. Here is a site that explains more. I don't think you have much to worry about. http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/charging_lithium_ion_batteries

I haven't ever actually heard of a Kindle catching fire, but I've heard several news accounts about cell phones, laptops, iPods etc. catching fire. When I bought my first cell phone, I was told in the store to never overcharge it for this reason.
I'm a little confused about one thing mentioned above - doesn't the Kindle have a lithium battery like all these other devices? I just checked the Kindle Touch manual, and that's what I'm seeing. Is that incorrect?

Do you have it in the lighted cover? When I charged mine before getting the cover it turned green and stayed green. Once I put it in the case it did do the same thing as yours. I think the cover may be pulling some of the battery and that may be the reason. I just plug it in before going to bed and it does fine. Also the plug is loose but doesn't seem to be problem and others have said theirs is to.
