Okay, I have a Kindle 3(?). It has to run on 3G because it's not compatible with my router. Is there any way for me to manipulate my library (moving books from active to archived) via my Amazon account? All I can see is the ability to move books to your Kindle and to delete them from your account completely, which I don't want to do.

I may have to buy a new Kindle...

Removing books from your Kindle to the archive doesn't need any sort of connection.  If you right arrow on a title, you can scroll down to Remove from Device. That will delete the book from your Kindle and it will show up in the archive. (Well, if you have the Whispernet turned off, they won't show up in the archive until you turn it on.) Someone else had also recently asked how to do a mass delete of all of their books from their device. The general consensus was to do a factory reset. That removes ALL of the books from the device, but not the actual account. Then  you can just add the books that you want to your Kindle again.

As someone who, until recently, only owned a Kindle 1, which only had 3G, I don't really understand the problem.  There are a couple things that can can only done via WiFi, I guess, like free transfer of personal documents, but you can always wait until you go somewhere that has wireless for those.  Otherwise, just turn the 3G on whenever you want to communicate with Amazon.  It's how the K1 worked....

I'm all for shopping, but I'd venture to say that if the 3doesnt work with your router then the newer ones won't either. Perhaps you need to shop for a new router?!

But there isn't an "image" of your kindle's books to manipulate on amazon. Lol, I can hear the complaints now about it being too much like iTunes, but i have to say, I much prefer having a sync device and being able to work on a bigger screen.

Anyway, how about new kindle AND router???  Cheesy

What level of encryption do you have on your router? Quite possibly the level of security on the router might be too strong for the Kindle. It might also be an issue with the automated connection process on the K3.

When we got my daughter her K3, it wouldn't connect to our router. I ended up removing all information from the K3 about the router, then adding it to the K3 (password and all) manually. Once I did this, it connected without me making any changes to the router. The other three K3s in the house didn't have that problem, go figure.

And, as others have said, if you remove the book from your K3, it will automatically be in archives the next time you sync. Everything you got through Amazon will still be on the server. If you have more than one device, you can even load the same book onto multiple devices at the same time.

I like the idea of a factory reset. The problem is, I have so many dang books on my Kindle, I'm starting to get carpal tunnel moving them off one-by-one. And the Kindle's repeatedly freezing and having to be rebooted three or four times before it starts working again.

I know Amazon told me my Kindle wasn't compatible with my wireless router. I don't remember why. If I go into a Starbucks, do you think I can get the wireless on my Kindle to work there?

It's worth a try.  I've connected at Starbucks.  And also at McDonald's.

I've connected at Starbucks as well and McDonald's and Panera -- though that requires the browser to open so you can click something.

Might be your router uses the "n" protocol and Kindles are only designed to work on b/g routers. . . . . .

And, with that, I've exhausted my knowledge on the subject. . . . if you're really curious, you might ask in the Tips, Tricks, Troubleshooting forum -- we have a couple of sort of WiFi wizards that hang out there and have helped a lot of folks out.

I have a router that is a netgear "N" protocol and I have no problem with my wifi on my kindle keyboard 3g and my fire.

I do believe that the "N" protocol will convert the "G" protocol  but the "G" protocol will not work with any devices with the "N" Protocol.

When my husband got his laptop we had to get a new router. and I called my computer Guru and he told me to get the Netgear "N" Protocol router.

Sophrosyne, I would do 2 things.

1.) check your router and do a hard reset on it.
2.) reset your kindles wifi information

then I would restart your router. you will need to reset your modem at the same time you do your router. and then you should be good to go....

I have had to do this once or twice before (Not because of the kindle but another device)

I have also had a router go out on me and not work and we had to replace it.

god bless and good luck

But even if she is able to connect with wifi, that won't let her remove the books in a different way.  She will still be able to either do a factory reset and remove all of them, or use right click (or is it left click) to remove each book.
