I have a Kindle Keyboard. After reading a tip on this forum about how to do a search I gave it a try. Anabelle froze and I had to hold the power button until she shut off (I think that's a kind of a reboot, right?). When I turned her back on I waited patiently until the bar finished filling in. Then I was horrified to learn that all of my categories were gone. More than 900 books just floating loose in there. I started the tedious task of putting things back in order, but it is just such a huge task doing them one by one that way. A friend said that I could download PC for Kindle and categorize the books that way. Yay! I thought. Once I put in my amazon account info (email and password), Kindle for PC immediately showed all my books. But here's the weird part - it showed the few categories that I had just created, as well as the ones that were previously on my Kindle. The reason I know they are both showing is that I worded them a little differently the second time around. I have a book that came recommended by a friend and I had originally put it in the category "----- says it's good" and after the reboot I put it in the category "recommended by -----". Both categories show up on Kindle for PC.

Now what do I do? And how is Kindle for PC reading categories that my Kindle Keyboard no longer has? I'm totally stumped and would appreciate any help you can offer.  Thank you.

Did you sync after rebooting?  That might take care of it, assuming that you had sync'ed at some point after creating the collections.

The first thing I would do...Make sure you are still sorting by collections.

If that isn't your problem...Turn on your whispernet sometimes the Kindle just needs to phone home after a reboot.

If you've synced and still don't have collections you might be putting your collections back in.  I think I would call KCS just to make sure there isn't anything else to try before going to all that work.

I guess I'll have to contact customer service and see if they can help. I've turned on wireless several times both before and after creating my original collections, and since I've started making the duplicates. The original ones still are not showing on my Kindle, but are showing on Kindle for PC. I've also specifically clicked on the synch button, but still no old collections.

And how is Kindle for PC reading categories that my Kindle Keyboard no longer has?

Your collections, along with your 'last read' place and your highlights and notes (for Amazon books only), are all uploaded to the Amazon "cloud" regularly as long as you have wireless turned on.

This is why Kindle for PC could see your collections, because it pulled them from the cloud.

One trick you can try that might bring your collections back to your Kindle: go into Archived Items, there should be an item at the top "Add Other Device Collections". Pick this and your collections from the cloud should hopefully be downloaded.

Amazon books should then drop back into the right collections. Unfortunately any books from other sources that you've loaded eg via the USB cable will not and you'll have to manually put them back in the right collection.

That sounds like it might do the trick.  However, I have over and over the page and I just can't find "Add Other Device Collections". I'm such a dunce. I'm on the "Manage Your Kindle" page. Is that where I'm supposed to see it? BTW, thanks so much.

This is on your Kindle itself, not on the amazon website.

Go to the home page, find the "archived items" collection and open it. You should find it there.

If you can't find Archived Items easily, set the sort order to "By Title" (go up to where it says "showing xx items by whatever", press right and pick "Title"). Archived items should then be somewhere near the beginning of the list in the "A"s

YES! That did it. Thank you so much! Of course, there were some I had deleted from my device that are back, but I'm not complaining. It's much easier to get rid of a few books than to put 900 into collections again.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I told you I was a dunce.
