These days I drink tea far more often than coffee, and am kinda partial to Twinings English Breakfast and Earl Grey.

LOL. If you read a lot of Scandinavian crime fiction, you'd know what a big signifier "bad coffee" is to the tone of a story and mood of the characters. It can count as foreshadowing or even as a kind of bitter summary of a bad day in the trenches. Very important cultural signpost! They seem to drink it all day long and at every occasion.

I think here in the states "bad coffee" can be the source of the writing cliches you mention, but I don't think it's got the psychological freight. Usually.
