I've decided I am going to start offering my art for use in book covers.  I've always really wanted to be an artist.  In fact, I feel like it is my real calling.  Yes, I'm a competent writer and editor, but I believe if I believe enough I can be a great book cover artist.  Obviously, I have no actual experience drawing, so I am willing to do a few covers for free to gain some exposure/experience.

Here is an example of my exceptional work:

So I hope I will get plenty of positive reinforcement from the indie community to encourage me to follow my dream!

How dare you offer Free Cover Art? Don't you know you will drive down the prices on cover art and bankrupt all cover artists?  Shocked

That's awesome. You could totally get money for that on deviantART.

Can you do animals? Werepeople? Horses? How about otters? I've been looking for a good otter artist, to do a piece of fanart of Marlene from The Penguins of Madagascar, dressed like Alyx Vance.

Oooh, how about cows? How are you at cows?

I would suggest that you tweak the font just a bit on that example. It's just a tad formal for the overall design concept and book genre. Other than that, you've got a winner!

I think it's photoshopped. Or maybe airbrushed, if she's old-school and analog and everything.

Not trying to be mean, but I'm basically convinced those nice skinny legs have been retouched, one way or another, y'know?

That is, without a doubt, the worst rendition of "Can't Buy Me Love" I've ever heard, Julie.

We are all now stupider for having borne witness to it. Wink

I did.  Although I dabble in horror shorts, when I close my eyes, I'm picking up vibes more along the lines of The Stand, but with stick figures.

Dear Ms. Dawson,

Thank you for your submission. As a professional art editor and mentor, I was glad to receive your $500 fee.

I've made some subtle suggestions and changes to your work, which I think will give it that final polish it needs to really take it to the top of the Amazon charts.

I think you'll see I limited myself to the work you contracted me for, thus maintaining your own unique artistic vision.

All best,

Maybe it's because I've read Julie's posts on the board, but if saw that cover, with her name on it I would buy it.  I would do so without hesitation, and expect to be amused.

Is the thing on the bottom left a bird with a vampire head?

Hmm. I feel like it might not look good in a thumbnail. And the image is a little too "busy" for my taste.

I'm glad you are happy with the results!  You should sell at least a dozen books now and make it to the number one spot in the fiction->science fiction->sci-fi with space in it->stick figure covers category!

If you want it to be, it is.  At my level of talent, the person enjoying the art can interpret it in any number of ways.   Grin
