I've been toying around with the idea of using a developmental editor of my second novel. I'd love to look move into this and was wondering if anyone could recommend one to me ... thanks!

I used Alison Dasho for my developmental editing. She was awesome, we worked well together, and I'm definitely using her again for the book I'm writing now. Here's the link for her website: http://www.alisonedits.com/ Her prices have gone up quite a bit since I used her last summer, so she may not be the most affordable option. I noticed that she does allow you to break the payments into installments if you want. Tracey

A developmental editor is an editor in the truest sense. Rather than line editing for punctuation and grammar, a developmental editor will advise you on plot, plot homes, plausibility, characterization, style issues, organization and other big issues.

Actually, not quite. What you are describing is exactly what an editor does. Developmental editor, content editor, substantive editor, it's all the same. In some instances a developmental editor is also with you during the writing process and they help you "develop" your project but less people in fiction use that than non-fiction. Typically what any fiction writer might call a developmental editor is an editor providing a substantive edit. Line edits for punctuation and grammar is a Copy Editor which comes *after* a substantive edit. And you'd be better off using different ones for each.

I've got some really good (writer and non-writer) friends who will pick apart a manuscript for me. So I don't use an editor for development.
I DO use a copy editor.

What is a plot home?
I'm not trying to be funny - I honestly have no idea.

Lol! I think she meant plot holes.

Well, I'm laughing. I didn't notice my typo--it should say "plot holes"!

Okay! THOSE I know about! I was scratching my head trying to figure out what a plot home was!

I use Red Adept's Alpha Reading service. I've done this twice (three times?) now, and will not publish again without it. So Lynn can never, ever stop offering it. Seriously, though, well worth the money.

I'd recommend Cheryl. She's a fantastic editor who is working magic on my new Rogue Hunter novel. Can't sing her praises enough.

I have a developmental editor who's with me all through the creative process. I couldn't get through the hard patches without her. She doesn't actually read until the end, but when I'm in book-trouble I can turn to her and we hash it out. She's invaluable. Annetta Ribken, and tell her I sent you.
