For the benefit of anyone not familiar with the Guardian, I should perhaps point out that anything less than the highest of high brow literary fiction is likely to be dross in their eyes! Unless you were hoping for the Booker Prize, it's probably a good thing for your sales that they think that!

I'm quite content to be selling my horrible, low-brow, horror-of-horrors, Fantasy. You know. The crap that every agent out there swore doesn't sell.

The only bad publicity is no publicity!
At least the responses to the article seem to indicate most readers do not agree with the author's views.
To be honest the Guardian has had some pretty stupid articles on ebooks recently. Probably intentionally. Ditto the publicity quote above: they are simply trying to stir things up.

Traci, if it's any consolation, the article has been uniformly criticized across Twitter, and in the comments piece of the article itself, the author is torn a new one.
It's a ridiculous piece, of course, and anyone with any sense will dismiss it instantly.

where the writer claims that "in digital, dross sales."
Choosing to believe this right now, to ease the woe of terrible sales

Seeing as how the author of the article comes off sounding both condescending and rather hostile to the world of self-publishing and ebooks, I don't think you should take it as a personal attack. The author clearly fancies herself as an avid reader who doesn't believe self-publishing should be as respected as commercially published books (at least that is what I gather by the tone implied through her wording, perhaps I am wrong). In any case, it is the opinion of one person. I am sure you will find a legion of fans who will find your book something worth spending both money and time to read =) Wish you the best of luck with books and even greater success! ~Annabell

I left a comment through Facebook that they're just upset that some indie authors are better than some of the "classic" authors like Joyce, Cummings, etc, and they're also upset that they can no longer control what we read.

Do you mean better writers, or their books are selling better? I've certainly read some great indie fiction, but I don't think I'm ready to compare them to James Joyce just yet...

Congratulations, Traci! I think it's awesome. You're sure to get some Google hits and hopefully sales as well.

Traci, the Guardian is never going to have a good word to say about someone who has actually got off their backside and made something of themselves. I mean.... what if everyone did that? Who would the Guardian self-righteously pity then?

I'm not quite sure how true it is that the writing world has so much control over what is read since so many books get published that wind up on the American Library Association Frequently Challenged List every year but are still published. But I do see your point, to an extent they have control since publishers decide which books get published and sometimes you're left wondering, "why the hell was this book published?" But as great as Indie fiction is, Joyce and Cummings are still in a league of their own. Just my humble opinion.

Better writers. What little I've managed to read of Joyce, he's over-rated, along with Dickens. But, that's just my humble opinion.

What a lovely judgment call that writer made. He's not only insulting you; he's insulting everyone who enjoys your book, and books of that type. How nice.
On the other hand, woo hoo! Free exposure!
