I'll be publishing the second book in my STRIKE trilogy soon, so should I label the one I've published as BOOK ONE IN THE STRIKE TRILOGY, so something similar?  Any one have experience with this?

If a sequel is planned, sure, go for it. Sometimes it's better for brand recognition to not "colon" the first book in your series... IE

Twilight
Twilight: New Moon
Twilight: Eclipse

Etc.

But some do...

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Etc etc.

So in short... up to you!

I'd say, if you are definitely planning a sequel and/or your book ends on a cliffhanger or wham ending like Lacuna, then yeah, go for it. I did. Smiley

Even if you weren't planning a sequel, there's absolutely no problem whatsoever in labeling your book "Book 1".

As a reader, YES PLEASE!!! Smiley

as a reader, I second this.  It'll save a lot of hassle.  Also, make it clear in your blurb that it's part of a series, if you intend one.

Yes! As long as it's a series, of course.  Smiley

Yes.

Lots of readers love a series, and they want an indicator to know that there are more coming.

Wow, thanks everybody!  I was leaning against it, so I'm definitely glad I asked!   Cheesy

I was thinking of STRIKE: THE HERO FROM THE SKY (THE STRIKE TRILOGY, BOOK 1)

And then "Book One of the STRIKE Trilogy" in the Product Description

How's that look?  Any other suggestions?

Yeah.  If it's standalone and just has a sequel, that is one thing.  But do, absolutely, label the first book of an intended series!

I did. Just make sure that you follow through on finishing the series, especially if it's a continuing story, and have reasonable gaps between each book so your readers don't have to wait forever.  I usually give myself about nine months--2-3 to write the rough draft, and 6-7 for editing, polishing, cover art, etc...

Mine are door-stopper fantasy novels, however.  Other genres might not take so much time to finish.

I considered using the designation "Book 2" for one of my sci fi novels, even though it was a standalone book and no series was ever intended.

Yes. This way people know the end is not "the end," and are expecting a sequel.

Hum. I've actually heard a lot of evidence that readers are less likely to buy a first book if there aren't other books out in that same series. They worry that they will invest the time and the author won't put the others out. I'd actually suggest putting numbering in when you have the second out.

I opted to put Book 1 on mine, knowing that it wouldn't be until the summer for book 2, and Christmas/early 2013 for #3. That way, as people will continue to see new books come out. I figure folks will buy the series once I'm at book 3.  Grin

I think that can be true in some circumstances, depending on the book.  It wouldn't work with mine, because the first book not only carries its own story, but sets up the central plot of the whole series, and there are a lot of mysteries/plot threads/Chekhov's Guns/etc... brought up that won't be resolved until later in the series, when those reveals are more appropriate.  If a reader knows what they're looking at, they'll be more forgiving than a reader who just sees a bunch of unresolved plot threads in a standalone novel.

That said, I'm also not being too aggressive about publicity, either.  Right now, I'm just trying to get the dang things out there.  In 2-3 years, when I have most of the series completed, then I'll worry about developing a readership and making sales.  It's a marathon, folks.

Most of my readers for Spirits Rising are folks from Canada, and a huge number from Newfoundland, who are dying to read a paranormal fantasy set up here with Vikings  Grin My regular readers all know my work well enough to trust that if I say there's more coming, then there's more coming. For those who are new to me, I know they'll need 3 or 4 books out first. And that's ok.

Probably a good idea. A lot of readers have expressed confusion because they aren't sure if I have a sequel coming or not (I do, but it doesn't say that anywhere).

Well, coincidence or not, I added "The STRIKE Trilogy, Book 1" to the title, and I sold ten copies in the last hour!  Weird!  (and awesome!)

Thanks everybody!
