I use Scrivener for Windows and love it; for development and the first draft. However, there are some problems with it (it's still the first Windows version, so I'll forgive them for now.) that make me prefer to edit in word. However, in order to compile into .mobi files, I have had to copy/paste each scene from word back into Scrivener in order to compile. And since I'm not terribly happy with the separator functions in Scrivener's compiler, I'm thinking that I would like to compile straight from the final edit in Word 2007. I was wondering what some of you use, and why?

For a long time, I hand-coded my manuscripts into html before uploading them to KDP. Then I discovered saving the Word doc as as a webpage, filtered. (Saving it as a regular webpage seems to create like a whole folder of crap for the page, which is utterly unnecessary.)

Perfect.

I always scrub the file for tabs, etc, and I don't go in for any bells and whistles. (No tables of contents or anything. Heck, I don't even put page breaks between chapters. I had an ereader for a while that would read those as several pages of blankness--gave me grr-ness.) It's easy, and it works for me.

YMMV.

(If I need a .mobi file for some reason, to send to for reviews, etc., I usually just download the meatgrindered one from smashwords.)

You can save your .DOCX's as .ODTs and use Calibre to convert them, if you wanted.

I too do Word docs saved as filtered HTML. I compile through Mobipocket Creator to check the file through the Kindle for PC app then upload the .prc to KDP and check it again in the previewer.

If I need a .mobi file (or an .epub), I use Calibre to create it from the .prc.

Using this method, I published out 20 books through KDP just in the past week (no, they weren't all mine Wink). I use title page graphics, links and graphics in the back matter, and mixed styles throughout (indents, no-indents, centering, heads, variable spacing between paragraphs, etc). One of the books even has a tricky custom table of contents. My interiors generally come out  clean and relatively attractive.

I'll also give my support to Calibre. It's a nifty little program that's easy to use, and it's being updated and improved constantly.

I use Calibre but first you have to save it as "Web Page" or RTF doc. (this is for Mac). Then put in in Calibre (free download) and convert.
