My son read a few of those when he was that age and he seemed to enjoy them. I never read them myself of course, but I think they are good books for kids.

It's not quality literature, but I had a daughter (now college) who HATED to read; this series changed that for her.  For about 1
year in 4th grade, she would only read books from this series unless forced by school.  They were the first books she read for pleasure.
After that, she began reading a variety of books for enjoyment.  She now travels everywhere with a book in her purse, even if it's
to read just a few minutes during lag time before a movie begins.  For this reason, I consider the series worthy (at least for our family).
