The Center for Fiction in NYC recently did a seminar/discussion/Q&A with Elmore Leonard. He goes over his 10 Rules for Writing, which I'm sure a lot of you have already seen posted around somewhere, but to hear him elaborate on them is great. He might be 86 years old, but he's sharp as a tack and funny! Plus a master at his craft.

The ten rules stuff starts at 14:30 minutes in.

Some interesting points: 

  • he writes longhand, then copies on a typewriter--no computer
  • he edits/rewrites as he goes
  • when he's done with the book, he doesn't go back to edit again
