If you break it down by genre, I've reached around 60, but in the store as a whole I've gotten down to like 3,000 or so.  It's shot back up though, and I didn't stay there for long.

Maverick hovered around the three thousands for a few months when it was doing well.

During one of KB BOD days, my novel maxed at somewhere around 5K.  My calorie book, which usually hovers between 10K and 20K, has gotten as low as 6K without any special effort.  I've never achieved any rock star rankings, but slow and steady (with higher book prices) works for me...pays the mortgage every month.

Technically WoB hit something really high for like an hour coming off free a year and a half ago, but I don't count that one. I believe DoC hit #198 about nine months back. Best I've had.

When I first started publishing it was really easy to get down in the 3k's, but now that same number of sales won't get you under 20k.

I also think the changeover ranking from free to paid doesn't count, and so my best was Inevitable down in the 400s. Been quite a while since then.

My Crazy Old Lady made it all the way to #183 once but usually is in the high 200s/low 300s.

Fresh Powder (A Winter Romance) was at#22 overall in paid Kindle store at Amazon.com at the end of January and #4 in the contemporary fiction genre.

It was also #4 in paid Kindle store overall in the UK last summer.

My best ever book of all time.

I agree with this. Seems like my books are ranked much less impressively than they used to be, even if I manage the same number of sales. I had books in the top thousand overall more than once way back when, and several of my books lived in the top two thousand for months, but lately I'm lucky if I get in the top ten thousand.

My highest ranking recently was in the top 200. That was after the book was free, but it stayed there a while.

I have only one book out and it is new so I'll reserve stating my highest for a while.

What I cannot understand is how the ranking works - the jumps from one hour to the next can be tens of thousands or even higher. Very odd.

One trend I noticed is that my book seems higher in the a.m then falls back down in the evening. This I am guess is due to the mass of new releases being posted.

It is an interesting barometer to watch.

I've made it to #9 in pedagogy.  Grin

I have a question for those of you who've made it in the top 100 overall in the Kindle store -how many sales a day does it take to get to the top 100 (on average)? I've been really curious about this for awhile.

My best was #366 and I'm still hanging out in the mid 400s, but the best I've ever achieved without KDP Select was maybe #7k and that was under a pen name. The best I've gotten on I Wish was #9k-#10k.

Paid, no idea. But I'm currently going free with Dirt Baby and peaking with this:

Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #373 Free in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Free in Kindle Store)
#2 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Fiction > Genre Fiction > Anthologies
#5 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Fiction > Short Stories

I'll take that.

Great feedback - so two more questions:

Staying specific to the general Amazon Best Sellers Rank – What is good and what is not good? Is top 50K good and bottom 500k bad??

I've heard that once a book gets into the top 100, then momentum will carry it for a long time given how Amazon pushes top 100. How true is this?

I hesitate to define any ranking as "good" or "bad." It's a reflection of sales relative to other books in the Kindle store and nothing more. Each author has their own standards for what is good or bad, and it also varies widely by genre.

Sci-fi short stories don't sell as much as, say, contemporary romance novels. And while I'm satisfied when one of my books is sticky at 20k, if David Dalgish's books were to all drop to 20k, he would suddenly be having a VERY bad day.

What ranking is going to be "good" for you and your books? Only you can decide that one.

Umm, #990 overall I think and quite a few #1-100s on the lists.

But I don't put much stock into ranks anymore if they're not first page top 20.  I noticed two sales on one low-selling book within a minute of one another, and the volatile rank shot up about 120,000 places for a few hours.  Pretty useless information.

Yeah, the coming-off-free slingshot effect changes things some.

Last year I hit exactly #199 three different times.  Not sure why that was the magic number...
