Paid, I got down to the low 30,000s with Being Emelle
Free it got to I think 870something overall, and #76 on its specific track.

Paid I got down to 70,000s with Pocket in the Sea
Free it got to 590something overall and #24 on its specific track.

I think my first book hit #96 on the genre list for a day or two last year.

But I don't really bother checking anymore...as long as I see sales here and there on the KDP dashboard (and other dashboards), I'm happy.

I am trying to get some perspective around the Amazon Best Sellers Rank.

What is the highest Amazon Best Sellers Rank you've achieved ??

20,000 @ 30 books per day and that would give me money to live on:) So I can only imagine how much nicer it would be for some at 1,000 a day:)

Not to hijack my own thread - how does that work when you have paid, switch to free then back to paid?

I guess we'll find out!

From watching others' threads, though, I think what generally happens is that there's an initial fall by a lot (because the Amazon algorithm doesn't see any paid sales for you during the promo) and then somehow it takes into account your popularity as a free book in your paid ranking.  I'll post what happens with mine once the promo is over!

Also, because this is pretty exciting for me, new highest ranking as of this hour!

#470 Free in Kindle Store
#1 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Fiction > Children's Fiction > Arts & Music
#4 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Fiction > Children's Fiction > Literature > Love & Romance
#43 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Children's eBooks

With my first book, Burn Out, I got to #14 paid overall last summer. Asylum Harbor reached #1 in the UK overall paid after being Kindle Daily Deal. In the US, it's been as high as #21 paid overall.
Special Delivery was #1 in Humor after going free for 3 days. It hung around the top 20 in Humor for a few weeks but hasn't reached the top 100 yet.

I am trying to get some perspective around the Amazon Best Sellers Rank.

What is the highest Amazon Best Sellers Rank you've achieved ??

My first book, No Good Deed, was #15 about the first week in June 2011.

The second book got to about 220 around the same time.

Great feedback - so two more questions:

Staying specific to the general Amazon Best Sellers Rank – What is good and what is not good? Is top 50K good and bottom 500k bad??

I've heard that once a book gets into the top 100, then momentum will carry it for a long time given how Amazon pushes top 100. How true is this?

My book stayed in the top 100 for about 22 days. It might have stayed longer, but I attempted to go free at B&N at the beginning of July, thinking Amazon wouldn't price match again, since it had just been free the month before, but they did. Because it had been so soon, it wasn't listed on as many sites and didn't do as well. Lesson learned. lol

It ended up being in the Top 100 overall in the month of June, coming in at #57.

When I first started publishing it was really easy to get down in the 3k's, but now that same number of sales won't get you under 20k.

See above. Totally agree with this poster... when I have a really great sales day I don't have the same ranking that I did say, back in September even! For instance, ten sales used to give an author a sales ranking of (fill in the blank: for the sake of example, 10K). Now those same sales garners a higher sales ranking number (say, 18K).

*

Like the other posters, I don't count coming off of free either! My rankings aren't nearly as impressive as some posters but I did break 2K a couple of times. What I loved was getting in the top 100 free on both my first books in my two different series and was thrilled to be under 5K for about 3 weeks for my first book, published in March 2011. For me, that was terrific.  Smiley I'm still hanging in there between 10-15K most days (for that same, first book) and have bumps all the way up to 5K again....

Learn Me Good cracked the top 100 after coming off free back at the beginning of January this year (heck yeah, I'm counting that!!).  I was in the top 100 for 3 days, peaking at #60.

The highest I got was #30 in the overall paid store with Alice in Deadland, and stayed in the Top 100 for 50 odd days. Now it's (to my immense annoyance  Smiley) slipped out and is at about 115. Have the sequel planned for release in March, so hopefully that will inject some new life into the series.

With Vimana I reached 112 (or was it 116) a few months ago, but then it's slipped a lot. It went down to about 1800 before I pressed `FREE' on it for the first time. The free promo ends tomorrow, and right now its #76 on the free list (and #1 in free Sci-Fi) so very curious to see where it lands once it comes back to paid.

When I did a free promo back in the beginning of January, I got to about 400 or so. Other than that, only about 40,000 paid.

I track mine on novelrank.com, so I know the record for Outrageous Fortunes was reached last summer, #9,338.  (I've never made it available for free.)
