Lucid Dreaming: becoming conscious during a dream and then deliberately effecting desired changes in the dream.
Robert has spent a good deal of time trying to achieve the state of Lucid Dreaming. He has had minor successes in that if he concentrates on a person before going to sleep, four times out of ten that person will appear in a dream that night. He has not yet, however, become lucid while dreaming.
Then, at an auction, he bids on a photograph of a young woman, whose face draws him like no other ever has. He attempts to place her into his dream and has success on a scale he hadn’t believed possible.
Now he has a dream world that he finds more attractive than the real one. In it he has a dream girl that will accede to his every whim—for he controls his dream and, therefore, her—and he intends to take full advantage of that situation. It seem ‘a dream come true’.
But all doesn’t go as smoothly as he desired. There is something strange about his dream girl, Trudi. She seems to be able to read his thoughts—though if she’s a figment of his unconscious, he can understand that. What he can’t understand is how she can speak a language he doesn’t know. He doesn’t know why she should have feelings which cause him to alter his plan of action from the simple fulfilling wanton lust to a gentle seduction, where he’s not sure who is seducing whom--or where they will finally end up. And he certainly doesn’t know why these lucid dreams should have continuity akin to that of his waking world. Something is definitely amiss.
Lucid Dreamer is a novella of some 22,500 words. It contains adult situations and is intended for an adult audience.
And, for any who are wondering, yes, I have become lucid in my dreams. Not often and not for long, but definitely lucid. Unlike Robert, I used those times to engage in a much more mundane pursuit—I used them to fly. Unfortunately, I always fell back into a non-conscious dreaming state very shortly thereafter. But it was exhilarating while it lasted.
