How do I get an ISBN number?

Through Amazon I got an ASIN for my novel but am considering assigning an actual ISBN.

Any help is appreciated.

You only need an ISBN if you're going to sell it in print. You can get a free ISBN from CreateSpace, or you can buy one from them, or you can buy one from Bowker.

Out of curiosity, why  pay for an ISBN when it's possible to get it for free? Is there a quantity limit? Or a difference between a free and a paid ISBN?

When you pay for an ISBN it is registered in your name forever, and can be used for that edition of the book on any venue. Free ISBNs from vendors are usually restricted in some manner. For example, some can only be used when selling through that vendor. Restrictions can vary. Apple demands the author provide an ISBN.

What's best? I don't know. It depends on what the individual is doing. However, in all cases, I would recommend learning all the characteristics and restrictions of an ISBN acquired from any source. It's usually better to learn these things now rather than later. Many will advise what we need and don't need. They may be right, but I like to know what's involved so I can independently confirm their advice.

Purchasing the ISBN number today ...

Question: Do I need more than one per book? I've seen mixed messages on this one.

That's a firm maybe. If you only have one print edition, and are not distributing ebooks to vendors that require them (like Apple), then you only need one. If you have a trade paperback, a hardcover, and a pocketbook, then you need three. One for each format.
It really depends on what you're doing.

If you are publishing through CS, they now have a $10 ISBN. You are listed as publisher, but if you publish outside of CS (with another POD or publisher), you need to get a new ISBN.

Huge difference - most are over hundred a pop. CS is only 10? Is there a difference?

Ahhh - so it comes from a pool of them. I don't own it.

Can I have one ISBN number per Title or does it have to be one per medium? As in eBook, Hardcover, Softcover, etc.

It has to be one ISBN per format. So if you have an eBook, a Hardcover, and a softcover, you will need three different ISBNs for each. Some people also use different ISBNs for the different eBook formats (Kindle, ePUB, PDF).

might be a stupid question – can I use 5 for one title and 5 for another title??  Or when buying the batch of 10 they are all ear-marked for one title?

You can use them with any title you want.  Ten ISBNs, ten titles, or whatever.

For each book I need 3 isbn's. 1 KDP, 1 Smashwords, 1 Createspace. Now, because I use my own isbn's, I can reuse the one from Createspace if I publish the book again at a local printer.

Luckily Canadians get free isbn's from the national archives in Ottawa. Just a reminder to anyone out there - you are required to deposit one print copy of your book with the archives.

Speaking of these ISBNs, what's up with the 10-digit and 13-digit versions? Any real difference? And why are there two versions?

About five years ago they changed from 10-digit to 13-digit.

I just bought a 10 pack and when I went in to manage them and set one up for my ebook, it assigned a 10 and 13.

If I remember correctly, the current 13-digit ISBNs are just the 10-digit ISBN with 978 at the start. So presumably when they run out of 978 numbers they'll use a different prefix and you won't be able to get 10-digit numbers any more.

I'm afraid to touch anything right now.
