Amazon has placed our zombie-filled anthology Dead Men (and Women) Walking on sale for the Kindle.

Dead Men (and Women) Walking features both short fiction and poetry, over two dozen tales of the undead in all.  (What?  You've never read zombie poetry?  You have no idea what you have missed!)

Like most collections that feature the undead, the works in Dead Men (and Women) Walking run toward the violence-and-gore end of the spectrum, gleefully reveling in descriptions of rotting flesh, mutilated corpses, and the horror of seeing loved ones turned — or turning — into zombies.  Yet as difficult as it is to find new ways to write about the walking dead, but Dead Men (and Women) Walking contains a handful of works that find fresh or amusing new approaches to its subject matter.

Some of the more darkly humorous stories in the collection include "Old Habits, New Habits" by Arthur Sanchez, in which enterprising zombies discover a socially sanctioned method of dealing with their hunger for flesh; "Shop 'Til You Drop" by Brian Rosenberger, which suggests that it might not be so easy to differentiate between the zombies and anyone else down at the local mall or plunked in front of the TV...

Other notable works in the collection include "Waking Finnegan," by Josh Benton, which gives the Irish song Tim Finnegan's Wake a hard-drinking undead twist. "The Walking Wounded" by Emily M. Z. Carlyle suggests a society of prejudiced but cautious coexistence between monsters and humans, while "Birthright" by Aurelio Rico Lopez III pits a vampiric son against his father and "Food Chain" by G. W. Thomas suggests a logical way to deal with pesky nosferatu.  "Bazaar Shades of Sorrow," a poem by Penelope Allen, combines memorable imagery with a sense of desperate melancholy.

review by Dru Pagliassotti, The Harrow

Zombie fiction is one of those very odd little sub-genres that you either get it or you don't. Those that don't get it often roll their eyes and wonder how many different ways can you unleash a zombie apocalypse on the world before it gets formulaic. To be honest, there is little about zombie fiction that isn't formulaic, but that really is the point. Zombie fiction is never really about the plot itself. It's about the characters reaction to the plot they are trapped in.

But you need to be a fan of zombie fiction to understand that. And if you are, then Dead Men (and Women) Walking is definitely for you. This collection of two dozen stories includes a few cameos by vampires and other types of undead, but it's really the zombies that get top billing. But before non-zombie fans stop reading this review, they should know that this book actually does find a few new ways to present zombie tales with a fresh spin, making it an entertaining read for horror fans in general.

Best of luck with this, bard. Had a story featured in a recent zombie anthology myself.

It's amazing the . . . insatiable hunger . . . there is for red meat zombie stuff.

My little sister (who is 31...not really so little anymore!) loves zombies.  She is actually the reason this anthology came into being.  She was so excited to read the dedication.  She tells all of her friends she has a zombie book of her very own.   Grin
