How long have you had your kindle 1? I'm just wondering as to how long I can expect my K1 to last. Thanks.

I replaced my KK with a K2, but I passed the KK along to a friend. Between the two of us it's over 18 months old and still going strong.

May of 08 still has original battery, and I use it most days. I also have a k2. I use both, and my one grandson reads for 30 minuets. (or longer) outside in the sun (rain or shine) daily. We bribe him with my kindle to get him outside and away from his computer.

I think my K1 must be Ann's Kindle's twin. Mine is also still going strong. I recently gave in and got a K2, and I'm giving the K1 to some friends who live overseas.

I've had mine for about 1.3 years. Still going just fine, battery still lasts forever. I've only had minor issues that I assume are associated with buying a 1st gen product. The main (right) Next Page buttons bends a little toward the end, and the second (left) smaller Next Page buttons sticks. Otherwise, functions perfectly.

I've owned my Kindle Classic two weeks short of a year, and it works like a champ. Battery life with wireless on is getting fairly short these days though. I mostly use at it home so keeping it charged isn't a big deal.

I hesitate to say it, but I'll have had mine for a year in August. My daughter's will be a year old in September, and my husband's been using his since Christmas. Nary a problem with any of the three - and believe me I'm knocking on my wooden head (and the coffee table) furiously right now! The only thing I've seen with mine is that there's a hairline crack in the "previous page" bar on the left. It's been there a good long while.

17 1/2 months of heavy use, including a few unfortunate falls and it's still going strong. The battery life isn't what it once was, though, and I'll probably buy a new battery within about 6 months or so.

If you let your batteries get to about 30% then let them fully charge, they will perform and last longer. I do that with my cell phone and laptops too. All batteries are really lasting a lot longer that way. Has something to do with battery charge memory.

If you let your batteries get to about 30% then let them fully charge, they will perform and last longer. I do that with my cell phone and laptops too. All batteries are really lasting a lot longer that way. Has something to do with battery charge memory.
That's not the case with the Lithium Ion batteries in modern cell phones and all Kindles. They live longest when they are kept at or near a full charge as often as possible. Every significant discharge lowers the lifetime of the cells. Old Nickel Cadmium rechargables, and to a very limited extent the Nickel Metal Hydride that replaced them, have a memory effect that reduces their usable capacity after repeated shallow-cycling. NiCds really needed to be fairly well discharged as often as feasible (every cycle if possible); NiMHs need it every 20 cycles or so. LIs have no memory effect whatsoever. However, some devices maintain their own calibration of the battery's capacity, and can be fooled into thinking the battery holds less charge than it does by repeat short-cycling. This does not actually reduce runtime, but it does make the battery meter less accurate. This effect is called "digital memory". Such devices may require an occasional deep discharge to recalibrate the meter (perhaps every 50 cycles or so, but would vary by device). My own K1 charging pattern is so erratic that I do not know if it is affected by this phenomenon. Back to the original question, my K1 is 9 months old and still works as good as new. I did buy a spare battery, charged it and dropped it in a drawer, but have not noticed any diminishing in the performance of the original one. It still lasts a good week/3 books between charges with WN off (verified last week on vacation), and 3-4 days/half a book with WN on.

Every significant discharge lowers the lifetime of the cells. You may be right; however, someone from Kindle Boards posted an article regarding what I stated. I will find the website for you. This is the site: http://batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-34.htm I hope I read it right.

The article you posted says pretty much exactly what was in my post The battery prefers a partial rather than a full discharge. Frequent full discharges should be avoided when possible. Instead, charge the battery more often or use a larger battery. There is no concern of memory when applying unscheduled charges.
Although lithium-ion is memory-free in terms of performance deterioration, batteries with fuel gauges exhibit what engineers refer to as "digital memory". Here is the reason: Short discharges with subsequent recharges do not provide the periodic calibration needed to synchronize the fuel gauge with the battery's state-of-charge. A deliberate full discharge and recharge every 30 charges corrects this problem. Letting the battery run down to the cut-off point in the equipment will do this. If ignored, the fuel gauge will become increasingly less accurate. Avoid frequent full discharges because this puts additional strain on the battery. Several partial discharges with frequent recharges are better for lithium-ion than one deep one. Recharging a partially charged lithium-ion does not cause harm because there is no memory.

I've had mine since March of 2008, reading it daily and it works fine. Haven't had to do a reset in months. Man, this is my all time favorite toy! ( ok, the netbook is pretty cool too, but the Kindle has my heart;)

I have had my Kindle 1 for almost a year. I leave the wireless and power on so the battery does not stay charged like it use to but I have a replacement battery when it stops working. I use it 1-3 hours daily and would miss it dreadfully if I did not get my reading time in.

Mine - 17 months so far and two resets, but no real problems.
Wife's - 15 months and no problems at all.
Mom's - 10 months total - 2 months on her first which was replaced (under warranty) due to frequent freezes. No problems in the 8 months that she has had the replacement. .
All 3 of us turn them off at night and recharge at about the halfway point.
