I've thought about book clubs in the past and I love discussing things I've read, but I have a question: Do those of you (us) who read numerous books a week have trouble spending weeks reading a book in smaller increments and discussing as you go? I mean, do you read ahead because you want to know then pretend you're reading along for the fun of a discussion .... I'm thinking that would color conversations if you already know what happens next, but I'm not sure how hard it would be to play along. I want to play this reindeer game but I'm not convinced I'll play right ....  |

Geoffrey,
we have people read as they go and people who've read the whole thing. We all seem to play well together!
Depending on the book klub, we may also have some where the book is read in advance by everyone, then discussed for a couple of weeks. It depends on the author in the case of Reading With The Author, the leader and the length of the book!

In the Outlander series, we have some that read and discuss as we go, some who couldn't wait and read the whole series (six books) in a few weeks or months, and some of us who are long time fans of the series. Some people discuss each chapter set, and some people jump in when they find part of the discussion interesting, or want to bring up something we haven't covered. You can participate in the way that suits you best. As Betsy said, dive on in. It doesn't matter if you jump in the deep end or the shallow end or just doggy paddle around.  |

The letter should focus on how important reading is. It should inform the parents how reading is probably the most important life skills humans need. Ask the parents to pledge to spend even 10 minutes with their child at night and to keep a log at home. This would enable parents to demonstrate to their kids that they value education as well.

In the book klubs I've been active in we were assigned chapters each week. If I did not get to read as far as the others I simply did not read the posts until I was caught up.

Online book forums are way better for me. Especially if it's a popular book. I can talk to people who've read the book without any waiting for a physical meeting..

I really appreciate being able to find this thread on here. Though an avid reader as well as a writer, I've never participated in a book club and wasn't really familiar with how it all works. Thanks for all this info -- now I can connect the dots for both on and offline.
