I have my Kindle 2 in the M-Edge Prodigy case, and I have a Borsa-Bella bag for storage at home or for travel. But my everyday handbag is fairly small, and the Borsa-Bella bag won't fit in there. So I've been looking for something very thin to use as a dust cover over the M-Edge case.

Today at the Container Store I found something in the kitchen section that may fit the bill. It's a soft 9X12 zippered bag used for storing silver. It's even blue, like my Prodigy cover.

http://www.containerstore.com/browse/Product.jhtml;jsessionid=R4NUVZHFAVDO3QFIAILSM44AVABBQJVC?referringProduct=10011930&referringCategory=77386&PRODID=60292&CATID=74104

I went ahead and bought it especially as it was on sale and only cost $9, but here's the question. It's meant to keep silver from tarnishing, so the cloth contains something called R-22, which, according to the box "neutralizes airborne sulphur, the cause of tarnish."  What I'm wondering is whether having this substance in the cloth would cause any harm to either the Kindle electronics or the leather in the M-edge case.

I tried looking this up online, but found nothing helpful. I suppose I could call the company, and may do so, but it's admittedly a rather weird question to ask them. So I'm wondering if there are any chemists here at KB, or anyone else who's tried using this type of cloth in this manner, and might be able to comment. Or just your 2 cents whether using this is advisable or not. (If it doesn't seem like a good idea, I'll use the bag to store my few pieces of silver jewelry, and I have some other ideas about things to use for the Kindle case cover.)

Is it the same chemical used in AC units?  Maybe you should contact the manufacturer and ask them if they can provide you with an MSDS sheet for the product.  In the meantime I'm doing a search for the MSDS.

Here's the link to their silver polish MSDS sheet:  http://www.walshbrothers.co.uk/Update/Silver_polish_MSDS.htm
Maybe you can look it over and see if there is anything mentioned about electronics...

The fabric that is used to prevent silver tarnish is generally one of two types.  Either the fabric contains tiny particles of silver or else it has been treated with zinc nitrate.  The fabric used by the Hagerty company is not the type that contains silver.  You would have to contact Hagerty and then the fabric supplier in order to determine if zinc nitrate or something else was used.

Whatever chemical is present in your bag could probably be removed by laundering the bag repeatedly.  However, that would most likely have an adverse effect on the appearance of the bag.  If I were you, I'd use it for it's intended purpose and find something else for your Kindle.

Thank you both for your comments, which were very helpful. I appreciated all the details. I wasn't familiar with the MSDS sheets. I took a quick look now on my lunch hour, and will look at it more thoroughly at home this evening. That's a helpful general resource to know about for the future, as well.

For now, I'm not using the bag with the Kindle, but will probably use it for the silver jewelry. Too bad, because it's the right size and type of bag, a nice color, and a nice soft texture. But not worth taking a chance. I will try contacting the company to see if I can clarify this.

I asked a chemist (electronics specialist) friend who also suggested sticking in the laundry several times first, but didn't feel it would harm anything.

I use the required & included MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) for everything in dentistry.  Tells me whether something is to be used with caution, how to dispose, etc.

Thanks for the additional information. I'm going to launder it, and just see what happens. If I decide it's not right for the Kindle after laundering, it should still work fine to pack items when travelling or for storage at home.
