Product Description
This literary thriller revolves around Parker Sloane. When he returns from a dismal foray into third-world cash-smuggling to his childhood home in the woods of New England, it seems he’s seeing his country and his blended stepfamily for the first time—and finding both just as twitchy, desperate, paranoid and unpredictable as the underworld types he thought he’d escaped.

Before he can even unpack, Parker goes head-to-head with his relatives—his tyrannical stepfather, seething younger brother, newly evangelical mother, and his alluring younger half-sister Rita—and with the demons they never exorcised.

Delicately but disastrously, Parker attempts to keep his family from imploding, unaware that they have their own plans for escape. The Moon in Deep Winter combines the dark comedy of the Coen brothers with the doomed lyricism of Denis Johnson, creating an airtight world of homicidal family dysfunction.

I just checked the top 100 books on Kindle and there is a really bad copy of New moon, the second book in the Twilight series, for .99. It is obviously an illegal copy and should be avoided.

That's a new one, a pirated version of something that's already for sale in the Kindle store.  Doesn't have a sample, either.

All 4 of the books appear to be available as bootlegs.  I wrote to CS about them about an hour ago ... I'm sure they won't be there long ...

Amazon pulled and refunded me for Eclipse and new Moon the .99 versions.  They I think are pulling these versions from the lists!  Yeah.

Sometimes I'm so dense I surprise myself.  I thought you were advertising a book titled New Moon Bootleg.  I thought I was going to read about bootleggers.  When I noticed who the OP was I thought to myself, wow, I didn't know she was an author.  GESH!!

I'm going to ask a completely noobish question... Embarrassed

But how does a bootleg copy of a book for the Kindle make it up on Amazon at all? Unlike, for example, used books, which could be illegal copies or galley copies and not stated as such when somebody puts them up for sale (I've gotten stuck with galley copies of books when I thought they were a regular used version of the book a couple times) doesn't Amazon control what's put up for sale on Kindle since it's on their servers? I thought only publishers and other groups that have a relationship with Amazon can sell titles for the Kindle on Amazon's web site.

Anybody can establish themselves as a publisher and upload an e-book to Amazon.  That's how us Indie Authors do it.  It's up to us alert readers to let Amazon know when we see an illegal copy for sale and I'm sure they catch it sometimes themselves.  It takes a while for the publishers to get paid, so the pirates don't usually profit from their bootleg editions.

Also, thousands of titles are uploaded each day, Amazon cannot keep up with every one of them, so once in while something like this does happen. Couple of Harry Potter books made it up there a few months ago.
