Product Description
This literary thriller revolves around Parker Sloane. When he returns from a dismal foray into third-world cash-smuggling to his childhood home in the woods of New England, it seems he’s seeing his country and his blended stepfamily for the first time—and finding both just as twitchy, desperate, paranoid and unpredictable as the underworld types he thought he’d escaped.

Before he can even unpack, Parker goes head-to-head with his relatives—his tyrannical stepfather, seething younger brother, newly evangelical mother, and his alluring younger half-sister Rita—and with the demons they never exorcised.

Delicately but disastrously, Parker attempts to keep his family from imploding, unaware that they have their own plans for escape. The Moon in Deep Winter combines the dark comedy of the Coen brothers with the doomed lyricism of Denis Johnson, creating an airtight world of homicidal family dysfunction.

Questions for chapters 20-24, with location numbers

Chapter 20 (Location # 3240).  Darcy is called to help the FBI. Why was Dr. Martiros afraid of her?

What did the prisoner, Sascha Kondrakyin, think of Ana? Who was Anina Khralovna? What did Ana learn was going on in the tiny country of Sedlakia?

Chapter 21 (Location 3496). Michelle Stratemeyer delivers Scott Zimmer to the Cymred estate. What did she learn about that family while she was there?

Chapter 22 (Location 3676). Darcy visits Ianthe. What does she learn from her?

Clio and Julio have a little scrape at school. Was anything surprising or amusing about that?

Chapter 23 (Location 3851). Ana surprises Dr. Martiros and picks up several discouraging facts. Name one?

Chapter 24 (Location 4051). Ana visits World Security Services and meets Rob Coombs. (Side note: In case Coombs seems an improbable character, you might like to know he's fairly closely modeled after one of my wife's cousins, who did EOD work for the SEALS.) What does it look like she's going to get Coombs to do?

Questions for chapters 20-24, with location numbers

Thanks for the location numbers!

Chapter 20 (Location # 3240).  Darcy is called to help the FBI. Why was Dr. Martiros afraid of her?

Seems he heard about (and saw) what she did to the ape that tried to kill her.

What did the prisoner, Sascha Kondrakyin, think of Ana? Who was Anina Khralovna? What did Ana learn was going on in the tiny country of Sedlakia?

Very interesting!  Apparently Kondrakyin is associating Ana with the mythical queen Anina Khralovna, who is meant to return to save her people.

Chapter 21 (Location 3496). Michelle Stratemeyer delivers Scott Zimmer to the Cymred estate. What did she learn about that family while she was there?

Apparently all is not well between Ianthe and Herecyn.  I was glad to learn that Ianthe had a backbone, though.

Oops, apparently I didn't complete the assignment!  I shall return...

Chapter 20 (Location # 3240).  Darcy is called to help the FBI. Why was Dr. Martiros afraid of her?

The good Doctor was aware of how Ana "kicked butt" with the HUGE Russian

What did the prisoner, Sascha Kondrakyin, think of Ana? Who was Anina Khralovna? What did Ana learn was going on in the tiny country of Sedlakia?

Mr. Kondrakyin said when he saw it was Ana he tried to protect here not shoot her. When Ana talked to Sascha in her native Luvit, Sascha realized she was Anina Khralovna come back to save Sedlakia.  He stated very good evidence.

Chapter 21 (Location 3496). Michelle Stratemeyer delivers Scott Zimmer to the Cymred estate. What did she learn about that family while she was there?

She learned that Ianthe was finally standing up to Herecyn.  She told him exactly what she thought of his money making escapades.

Chapter 22 (Location 3676). Darcy visits Ianthe. What does she learn from her?

She discovers that Ianthe is very happy that Scott is staying with here.  She also tells Ana that Herecyn is staying at a hotel in the city, she also breaks down and tells Ana about what she knows about Herecyn's activities.

Clio and Julio have a little scrape at school. Was anything surprising or amusing about that?

As usual Clio came to the rescue of Julio :-), then the twins tell the bully that he doesn't need his bad friends and they would be his friend.  The twins are definitely their parents kids..

Chapter 23 (Location 3851). Ana surprises Dr. Martiros and picks up several discouraging facts. Name one?

That Russian engineers are excellent candidates to convert Thoman technology into a weapon.

Ana wants to take a trip to Russia and she wants Rob to assist her.  Rob agrees but tells her they need a better plan.

Darcy is called to help the FBI. Why was Dr. Martiros afraid of her?

After the fatal smackdown she put on the big, bad enforcer, Dr. Martiros felt he had reason to be fearful.

What did the prisoner, Sascha Kondrakyin, think of Ana? Who was Anina Khralovna? What did Ana learn was going on in the tiny country of Sedlakia?

He thought she was the return of the legendary Queen Anina Khralovna who picked up her fallen husband's role of leading the Sedlakian people into the safety of the mountains from other tribes.  She then left telling the people that she would return to them if she was needed again.
Ana was told that Sedlakia is a rich source of natural gas and in order to secure control of this resource, a device had been used to eliminate the population of three villages.

Michelle Stratemeyer delivers Scott Zimmer to the Cymred estate. What did she learn about that family while she was there?

Michelle learns that Ianthe blames Herecyn for Scott's injuries and the danger Ana has been in.  Michelle also learned that Ianthe and Herecyn's marriage was in trouble.

Darcy visits Ianthe. What does she learn from her?

Ianthe tells her that Herecyn, in his greed, knowingly gave up the information that could lead to weapons use and that Ana was still on Earth and posed a threat to the Russians.

Clio and Julio have a little scrape at school. Was anything surprising or amusing about that?

Clio defended Julio against some boys who were bullying him.  She handily took care of these boys (she is her mother's daughter) and after all the commotion she gave one of them the flower that she had in her hair.  The scene was witnessed by one of the school staff members who then asked Clio about the incident and the flower gift to Arturo.

Ana surprises Dr. Martiros and picks up several discouraging facts. Name one?

Dr. Martiros told Ana that the UN, in order to avoid an international incident, would not likely intervene in the killing that was occuring in Sedlakia.

Ana visits World Security Services and meets Rob Coombs. (Side note: In case Coombs seems an improbable character, you might like to know he's fairly closely modeled after one of my wife's cousins, who did EOD work for the SEALS.) What does it look like she's going to get Coombs to do?

It appears Ana is going to have Coombs' go with her on her self-appointed mission to Sedlakia.  Coombs is fluent in a number of languages including Sedlak.

afraid or overwhelmed?

What did the prisoner, Sascha Kondrakyin, think of Ana? Who was Anina Khralovna? What did Ana learn was going on in the tiny country of Sedlakia?
superstition is alive and well in countries that are not quite as "modern" as the US and she fit exactly the model of the queen that left but promised to return and save her people.

Chapter 21 (Location 3496). Michelle Stratemeyer delivers Scott Zimmer to the Cymred estate. What did she learn about that family while she was there?
That they were not all like Ana - and there are sinister things about our distant cousins as well as us

Chapter 22 (Location 3676). Darcy visits Ianthe. What does she learn from her?
Things are not all peachy but not a positive.

Clio and Julio have a little scrape at school. Was anything surprising or amusing about that?
Clio was the protector

Chapter 24 (Location 4051). Ana visits World Security Services and meets Rob Coombs. (Side note: In case Coombs seems an improbable character, you might like to know he's fairly closely modeled after one of my wife's cousins, who did EOD work for the SEALS.) What does it look like she's going to get Coombs to do?
oh he seems very realistic to me!  she knew she needed some heavy duty assistance, not just sure what she was going to get into, but wanted someone who could think on their feet and cover her back, she is learning about being impetious.

Chapter 22 (Location 3676). Darcy visits Ianthe. What does she learn from her?

She learned that Herecyn had knowledge of what was going on, but that Ianthe was on her side.

Clio and Julio have a little scrape at school. Was anything surprising or amusing about that?

I thought it was interesting that Clio was willing to stick up for her brother, but Julio wasn't willing to defend himself.

Chapter 23 (Location 3851). Ana surprises Dr. Martiros and picks up several discouraging facts. Name one?

The Russians are fully capable of turning the Thoman technology into a weapon, and it's not likely that the UN or another country will be willing to step in.

She wants Coombs to take her to Sedlakia and be her translator.

Quick note in case anyone missed it: there's another thread posted for the next set of chapters. We're moving along smartly now. This weekend I'll have yet another thread for the set after that as well. Thanks to Dona for the idea!

Rrrrrr. Moving too fast?

Well, at least with different threads, it's easier to move at your own pace. Right, Dona?
