Hi this is a sincere question, I am not just trying to stir things up. I have noticed a few on this board seem to own multiple kindles for their own personal (not family) use and I was wondering why they chose this. I understand the differences between the three versions and can see how the dx is better than the k1 or k2 for certain types of reading. So I can understand if someone travels extensively or uses one primarily for work why you might. But I am curious as to why the average kindle user would decide to have 2 or 3 kindles vs 1 kindle and $300 or $489 worth of more books. Thanks in advance.

I think a lot of Kindle owners have bought their Kindles one at a time. I cannot see buying more than one, but I can see buying the newer versions for various reasons. I think the K2 and KDX are preferable because of the larger memory and bigger screens, but I only own the KDX. I cannot see buying any new version just to own it.

The KDX is a fairly big bugger and I use it all the time at work, loading and unloading pdf's for various meetings and catching up on the latest Associated Press US and world news. Easily fits in my briefcase but it does get to be a pain to carry around when I'm running around town on personal business. After seeing and handling a few K2's at the monthly **** Area Kindle Klub meeting I can see an advantage to buying another kindle, the K2. Much smaller, a little lighter, the screen isn't as big, but then I don't intend to use it for work purposes. Ever try and use a KDX while waiting in a looong line at Costco? The K2 would be much easier to use. So I'm now saving up for a new K2 and using the KDX whenever I'm home, at work, or where I can spread stuff out without having to worry about space. Of course, this opens a whole new can of worms and expenses such as what kind of cover to get (Oberon or Noreve), which snazzy skin, what shall I name it, etc. The KDX is for work and is fine in it's plain old Amazon cover with a generic skin for protection. Best Wishes.

I had a K1 for myself, and one for my husband... When the K2 was announced, I ordered it for myself, despite having not used the K1 terribly often.... I kinda figured it was my "job" to own one, being a moderator here, and wanting to provide technical support to our members.... I loved my K2 far more than my K1, and found that I no longer wanted to go to the library to get books, reading them had become "cumbersome." I did keep my K1, though I rarely used it, and I kept all of my Amazon samples on it.....
Then arrived the horrible day when my husband called me to tell me he had broken the screen of his K1.... I passed my K1 to him, and sold the Oberon cover that graced his dead Kindle.... Now we are down to just two Kindles.... *sigh*

I'm not sure why anyone would want to have multiple kindles, except as stated before they wanted the latest and greatest. I have the K2 and have no intention of buying the KDX at least not any time soon. I love the size of the K2. I take it with me everywhere.

I for one have 2 readers but not 2 kindles; I have a Sony PRS-505 and a Kindle 2. I use both of them. Some people on the Mobile Read board have recommended Nora Roberts and I've so far read a 3 book series from her and they were really good. I did not buy them; I checked them from the library using my Sony PRS-505 (NYC library had 40 of her books and Brooklyn library had 19); there's a couple of more authors that I want to try and having a PRS-505, I don't have to buy their books. I bought these readers almost 11 months apart so it was not too bad. I for one would not want multiple Kindles but that's just me. I plan to add a 3rd reader but it's no urgency because I want a bigger screen so I'm waiting to see what comes out the next 6 to 9 months. I would preferably like a non-Sony and non-Amazon reader but will update the PRS-505 if Sony comes up with a better model this year and hold off on adding a 3rd reader if that happens! I love owning different readers because there are so many more options when it comes to content and that's the whole reason of buying the devices in the first place.

I have the DX, k2. No important reason other than I had the disposable income this year and just like them. If I was on a budget, I would just have the k2.

I have a K1 and a DX for much the same reason as jaybird. I use the DX for the daily newspaper and PDF files for my tax work and music. K1 is for everyday novel reading.

I started with the K1. Updated to the K2 and passed the K1 on to a friend. I also picked up the DX to go along with the K2.
The short version is I use the K2 for my commute and travel reading. Most the text heavy works.
I use the DX primarily at home and mainly for graphic novels, newspaper and magazine subs. And for PDF items and anything generally more graphically heavy.
It's pretty much the same reason people have for years owned stereos and various portable music players (walkman, discmans, MP3 players.)

I think it is all about personal choice/preference, and what one can afford. I mean why do people have multiples of anything?? TVs, computers, iPods, handbags, and the list goes on and on. Do they REALLY need them? No probably not. Does need have to be a part of everything we own ?? Definitely not. What other people own or why really isn't something I care about, nor do I need it explained to me. If they are happy with what they own then I think that's wonderful. I choose to own multiple Kindles, because I want to. I also own many, many books for my Kindles for the same reason. It's truly just that simple. Hope that helps. Happy Reading.

I can understand if someone just wants multiples of kindles (or any items for that matter)
But what I would love to know is how they use them? I understand if someone uses a dx for work,k2 for home etc. But some people have multiple k2's just for personal use. How do you pick which kindle to pick up and use? Are they all just in different rooms, and where you seem to be is which kindle you end up using? how does it work? how do you decide which one to use at any given time?

Well currently I have a K2, and I do love it. But...I also know, I will love the DX, I have on order. Because sometimes, I would JUST LOVE having a larger font, and not have to wear reading glasses. Many more words per page, will make me quite happy as I escape into my world of reading. I will use the DX for home reading, and the K2 for when I am going out, because its small and easily portable. I love having something to read, at the car wash, doctors office, etc etc. I understand that people's value systems differ, and one might question, the need for so many "Things".

Minekinder- love your pic-is it yours?
I have an original k1 and took the early buy opportunity for the k2. I use both, and they have different features that I really like. My K1 (Sookie) I use for my subscriptions and blogs, and I use it as my overall storage library ( the sd card makes this possible). I also use this one to read out by my pool because the font is a little darker, and because I have the medge water protective case for it.
My k2 (Mackayla Lane) I love because of the general design. It is thinner and fits more comfortably in my hands, and the buttons are more comfortable to use. The whispernet is also faster to connect and download on Mackayla.
I am not interested in the Dx- way too big for me.
Do I need two kindles? Probably not, but like another poster said, I bought them at different times, and found I liked the different features on each enough that I decided to just keep them. I also have an original ipod as well as the newer ipod touch for the same reasons.

Maybe I missed it, but the only references I've seen to people have multiple Kindles of the same model have been couples and families so they are really for separate individuals. Is there really anyone who has talked of owning multiple K2s just for themselves?

I have 2 Kindles and I use them all daily depending on which room or part of the house I'm in and where I'm going. I got my first Kindle in 5/08 and my Kindle 2 in 2/9 because of T.T.S. I could give one away to my family but I'm selfish (and they can afford to by their own). My 2ND kindle 2 is a back up and I keep that in my bag ready to go. I may get the Kindle DX in the fall, for no other reason that I want it. (I'm also spoiled).

Minekinder- It's a great pic! It looks a lot like my boy. Mine is also the love of my life (don't tell DH ) As you can see, he is very spoiled, but one of the sweetest, best behaved dogs I've ever had. His favorite pastime is sitting outside with me while I "kindle" and throw his little rubber fish in the pool/yard for him to chase! His name is Roscoe (his breeder laughed when I named him, he was only 8 wks old and adorable) and he just turned 3. It's always fun to see other standard owners-you don't see too many of them!

Just tried to load some photos of my Boys, but the site won't load. Tessa, dwaszak, I think you can only know how wonderful this breed is, if you have one dwaszak, Roscoe sounds adorable, one of my Boys is curled up next to me, on my bed right now! My babies would rather be with me , then be anywhere else! Tessa, I'm so sorry, about Sara My Boys are 6, I hope and pray to have them for a long long time yet. There wonderful in pairs Good to meet you both

Minekinder and tessa- It's great to meet both of you too! Tessa, I too am very sorry about Sara. I lost 2 border collies at ages 18 & 16. They become a central part of your family! Minekinder- Roscoe loves to lay in bed with me in the mornings when I read too- it's our "reading/poodle belly rub time". He sleeps at the bottom of the bed with my DH and I, but as soon as my husband gets out of bed @5, he moves up into his proper spot . I have come to believe standard poodles are the best- as smart as the border collies, but less intense and more cuddly. My boy is always giving away hugs and smiles. It's really great to meet fellow kindlers and poodle lovers!

I have a K1 and a K2 - the K1 was passed down to my children, and I use the K2. I offered to sell the K1 and get a K2 for my children, but they like the K1 as it is. And I like having a K that has a user-replaceable battery and a SD card slot, even though I don't use the slot and have never had to replace the battery yet... it could happen! I want a third reader because I have a lot of children and they fight over the K1 , but it most likely won't be another Kindle. I'm waiting to see what Sony is coming up with (they've slowed down or stopped selling their 505s and 700s, from what I understand, so it seems like they're on the verge of announcing their next reader). I like the way Sony is moving toward the direction of supporting more formats, as well as making their readers compatable with library ebook downloads. Although I can read library downloads on my Kindle by making a few software adjustments, I may not always be able to, so having two readers that can read different formats just seems like a good move to me. So that's why I have two readers. I don't think I would if I didn't have others in the house who also love to read (unless the two readers were for different purposes).

I have both the K1 and K2, got them both when they were newly released. I considered selling the K1 as I rarely used it after my K2 arrived. But it rapidly found two new uses in our home: 1. My 11 year old reads more and better books if he can use the Kindle, and he actually falls asleep easier at night instead of being restless at bedtime; and 2. My teenager reads extensively in one genre; almost nothing in any other. When the Kindle is laying around, he'll pick it up and read something new, almost every day, extending his scope and enjoyment of books. I'm all for increasing literacy and the love of books in my boys. It is also, of course, a backup for my K2, if needed. For us, for now, it makes sense to keep both Kindles. Per your question, no, I'm not really using both. I've simply redeployed my K1. I have no interest in the DX, as I love being able to stash my K2 in my purse and fly out the door. I probably would love the DX if I saw it, but for now I'm happy with our little collection and do not want to add to it. When they offer a color Kindle, I'll be interested I recently heard Jeff Bezos say that is many years down the road. I'm not certain, but I doubt if Plastic Logic or anyone else can come up with anything I'd like better than Kindle. So I'm in for the long haul.
