This has been on my TBR for a long time now. Those darn Outlander books are taking all my time. Plus I'm in a I hate every thing I read mood. I really want to start this one though because I've heard so many good things about it.
I know what you mean about the mood - I'm in the same boat right now. I just finished Manifold by Stephen Baxter and was pretty underwhelmed, now I'm in a rut. But snag the sample of IHN and take a peek now and then to see how it strikes you; just remember that the story changes quite a bit after chapter 4... Only better. Right?
LOL!! Well, put it this way: if these ever get made into a movie(s), I hope that someone like Peter Jackson directs them. But that's a whole other thread right there!

I was a little bit lost in the opening chapter, but that ended quickly for me. The book took off and I never looked back! I was in San Diego on vacation, and found myself reading frantically to finish!

Mike. . . .I wonder if the opening chapter(s) (the battle scenes) should be a 'prologue'. You see that a lot in books: something that happened a relatively long time ago and/or is somewhat separate, though related to the 'current' action. Maybe that would make that first section produce less of a "what the heck?" reaction.
(I admit I'm going by memory as it was a while ago that I read it. . . .)

Something like that would probably work. If I knew then what I know now, I would have done things a bit differently (having some folks read along to keep me from writing down blind alleys, for one). But at this point, I'm going to leave the original story as-is. If by some miracle it got picked up by a publisher or something, that would be different. But at this point I figure I'll concentrate on getting new stuff written... Speaking of which, I'm going to take a quick nap and then try to get going on the next book. I've tentatively called it "In Her Name: Legend of the Sword". Not sure how long that'll stick, but it sounds pretty good (not having written anything yet - LOL!)...

Waaaayyyyy better. Did I steer you wrong with Outlander? I loved IHN, and I don't even read sci-fi. Some people find it a bit slow going at first, and there are a couple of points where you think it might be slow, but a page or two later, and Mike has you hooked and pulling in the direction he wanted you to go.

Sorry to wake up a sleeping thread, but I've just finished reading IHN and was *really* impressed with the plot and the style of writing - well done to Michael. I have just bought First Contact and have downloaded the sample chapter for Legend of the Sword. Something which almost put me off buying IHN was the font errors in the sample, for instance: Carré reads as Carré - however, I'm really glad that I did buy it as those errors are not present in the actual book. I'm really looking forward to the sequel, with Shera-Khan as the main player in the story (ps: I found this forum on trying to find out more about the author).

Great - glad you enjoyed the reads so far! Something which almost put me off buying IHN was the font errors in the sample, for instance: Carré reads as Carré - however, I'm really glad that I did buy it as those errors are not present in the actual book.
THANK YOU for pointing this out! Nobody's ever mentioned this before! I'm not sure how it happened, as the sample of the book should be drawn from the main file (which, as you indicated, doesn't seem to have the problem). Good grief. Okay, I'll see if I can't get that fixed... I'm really looking forward to the sequel, with Shera-Khan as the main player in the story Well, let me get the prequels done, then we'll see! (ps: I found this forum on trying to find out more about the author).
Just out of curiosity, was there anywhere that might have been more helpful to you to find that information? I want to try and make it as easy as possible for folks to find things they're looking for, so if you have any suggestions, I'm all ears...! Thanks! Mike

Welcome, Bigal! There are a lot of great "indie" writers who hang out here at KindleBoards. . . . . .check out the various threads in the "Book Bazaar". . . . .and, as you might suspect, a lot of discussion about Kindles in general too!
Mike is one of our most senior members. . . .many of us here have read his books and eagerly await the next installment! Be sure to check out "First Contact" and "Legend of the Sword", the first two thirds of the "Prequel" trilogy!

Most of us here have known Mike forever and started reading (and loving) his books because of it. Good to see someone did it the other way around. Mike's screen name used to be kreelanwarrior. He just recently changed it to his name, so that's probably how you were able to find him. Welcome to KB. Lots of excellent authors hang out here as Ann said. As a matter of fact, about the only books I read these days are our own indie authors. Mike, I've had that happen before with samples. Weird symbols crop up, but when I buy the book, it's just fine.

It's odd also because the blooper characters show up in the sample of the DTP version, but not the version that's distributed to the Kindle store from Mobipocket.
Well, I went ahead and sent a note to DTP support to see if they can sort it out, so we'll see. Very odd...

I think google is very kind to you, so you needn't worry too much about folks finding you (even though there is another Michael R Hicks floating in the ether ) I did find kreelanwarrior.com and your facebook page and also did some reading on other peoples pages. Ann & Margaret: thanks for the welcome! I actually had to ask google what is an "indie author" I did pick up a couple of good looking recommendations in the Book Corner's "March recommendations", but I'm afraid that Mr Hicks has my attention at the moment...

Yeah, Mike has a habit of getting our attention, usually well into the night. You know what I mean. You have to be up early in the morning, and you keep telling yourself ... just one more page, just one more page, just one more page.

Mike I am finishing the latest. It is good to know that Sato as the messenger is still looked-after by the blue-girls. I like Sato. And about time that Desh-Tar let loose.
But about finishing (only have 400 thingies to go) - one will start nagging for the next one soon.
Just sayin.......

LOL! Well, I actually had written the first chapter plus a start on the second for the next book in the series which, based on pressure from certain quarters <ahem> probably won't end with this book. Some familiar faces will appear from First Contact and Legend, but I probably won't be getting back to that until this summer, after I finish the thriller-in-progress (still don't have a name for the bloody thing!)...

Or despite it? Betsy Remember when Mike confessed that he often wears his underwear on his head? When I read the original and Reza's parents were fighting the Kreelans, all I could picture was his father wearing a pair of tighty-whities as protective headgear.

Or perhaps this inter-galactic model would be more appropriate. Then there's the fan favorite
