I finally jumped off the fence and ordered my Kindle DX this morning - so I guess it's an official "Kindle Watch." LOL Now if I can learn to use the darn thing.

Congrats! I'm sure you'll not only figure out how to use it, but soon be so attached you can't bear to leave home without your Kindle. Whatever you do, stay away from the accessories thread! *You looked over there, didn't you??* Don't say I didn't warn you.

Congratulations! I have a K1 and absolutely love it! They are very easy to use, so don't worry about the 'learning curve'.

Just an update.... My KDX arrived yesterday, spent the evening reading thru the user guide....seems simple enough. This afternoon, I perused the Kindle Book Store, made a selection, and it still hasn't downloaded. Yes, Whispernet is on, signal is strong, and I had no trouble getting a sample read of another book. I'm going to give the DX another day or two, but am thinking of sending it back and getting the K2 instead. The DX is kind of weighty.

You may need to call customer service about the downloading. It may be just a setting they need to do from their end to get your kindle to talk to your library. That has happened in a few cases.
Also whispernet can be weird at times. Sometimes my K1 won't download right away and then again it does download in the minute or so they say it does. And that is with good strength signals etc. So give it a chance and talk to CS they are pretty good.

I didn't have to call CS afterall - and - the more I become accustomed to my new DX, the more I am loving it. I'm still second guessing if I'd be just as happy with the K2. I made a paper template of K2's dimensions, cut out the viewing area, and used that to hopefully help in my decision. Although the DX may be overkill (I am not a student and won't use it professionally) for me, I think I'll stick with it for the larger screen. So now I'm ready to customize my new KDX - off to shop! LOL

I have a K2, which I love for the portability: it fits easily into my purse for when I might have a chance to read when out. But I bought the KDX for my husband - since he doesn't carry a purse, I figured the portfolio size would be fine for him. He isn't using it for school or business, but he read hardback books mostly, so I thought he would prefer the larger size.
Every time I use his for even just a few minutes & then go back to my K2, it strikes me how small the screen is on the K2. And sometimes it would be nice to have fewer page turns.
So don't second guess your choice - each version has its own strengths. Just enjoy the beautiful, large screen & remember that it still weighs less than a DTB. And with certain covers, you can prop it in your lap & don't even have to hold it.

I don't use my KDX's professionally or as a student either, and I absolutely love the screen size. I use the KDX so much more than my K2. Enjoy your KDX

I have found that when I order Kindle books I have to turn Wispernet 'Off' and then back 'On' after I've ordered the books. It seems that if Wispernet is 'On' when I order them they don't download. When I go to My Kindle Account on Amazon after ordering the books, they are in Pending status until I've turned Wispernet off and back on.

My observation is that periodically throughout the day, the Kindle seems to 'phone home' if the WN is on, and check for any items that need to be downloaded. You may have just bought something but until your K checks, it won't know there's anything to D/L. I don't think Amazon pings it to alert it. . . .but I don't really know. It does seem that, if WN is off, and I buy something, and then go turn WN on, it usually comes down on its own within 5 to 10 minutes. I can't say for sure what happens if WN is already on because I'm usually not using the K if I'm on the computer (go figure!) but any books I bought are usually there when I do go back to the K sometime later. . . . .if not, it is true that turning WN off then back on will generally trigger the download.

I use the check for updates option and anything new I've purchased will immediately download.

Congrats on landing that hot item! Between the Kindle 2 and the Kindle DX, I think I prefer handling the DX. Is bigger better?

After I make a purchase I just go to the menu on the home page and click on the option that says something like "check for new and sync" then it downlaods everything for me. Otherwise I think it just checks every 10 minutes or something. Rachel

Yep - off then on sends a signal to download anything available but not currently on the Kindle.
