Hi, my name is John and I am new to these kindle reading devices. My sweetness and I are very avid readers, so a e-paper device seemed natural for a present for her. Naturally, I stumbled upon the Kindle 2, and decided to get her one.
She is moderately tech savy, so a Kindle 2 should be an easy device to use. I read a lot of stuff about it, so i am confident in my purchase. I wanted to post here because I am not going to be a kindle owner myself YET (I read lot of comics and manga, so I am going to wait for a color version... yes, I know I will have a long wait), so I didn't think posting in the intro board would be appropriate.
I am getting her the CaseCrown Memory Foam case (news print style) and a Tranquility skin for her Kindle 2. Both of these are on amazon. I also read a lot on my psp, so I have dozens of books in .txt format (I convert them to .jpeg on my psp) for her.
Any tips or ticks I should know?
I read some articles on Sunfade, is it right out fo the box the problem starts? Is it covered by warrenty?
If I buy a used Kindle 2, how do I get her an extended warrenty? Is there a way?
I really hope she likes this. I know I will want one in the future, but I need to read Deadpool and Irredeamable, and they aren't in black and white.

Welcome to the Boards. Sunfade has not been quite as big an issue as it was when K2 first came out. Sunfade is covered by the warranty. If the problem arises make sure to talk to Kindle customer service as opposed to Amazon customer service. If you are shopping for a used K2 then ask the seller how much warranty is left and if there is an extended warranty, and the lenght of it. The extended warranties are transferrable. I do not believe there is a way to purchase an extended warranty on a K you purchased used.
Be sure to tell her about the KindleBoards. We are a fun and informative bunch of K-lovers. deb

Oh, I intend to. I love this board, and its where I found out about the various cases and which to avoid. thats how I settled on the CaseCrown, because I researched each one. Frankly, I got it because it is one of the few that zipper shut. also, its cheaper and looks better than the $40 discontinued case (I forget the name).
Also, everyone seems to be so friendly, so its a no brainer for me to suggest this place.

It is still possible to get an extended warranty for a used kindle under certain circumstances. SquareTrade.com offers 2 types of extended warranties for new or used kindles. For the standard 3 year extended warranty (essentially an extended manufactures warranty) the kindle needs to have been purchased within the last 3 months. For a slightly more expensive coverage that includes accidental damage the kindle needs to have been purchased within 30 days. Both warranties are well worth it and the price is very reasonable.

I don't think your girlfriend will have any trouble using it, and it's certainly a great gift. The only thing I can suggest is to keep an eye out for any flaws, such as the sun-fade issue you've already mentioned. If you find one, Amazon will send you a replacement quite promptly.

If you do get a new K2 - the sun fade will probably happen right out of the box, well outside in the sun anyway.
You are a terrific guy John! As far as any tips or tricks, just roam around the board and you will get more information than you will know what to do with!

Hmm... I would prefer she have the warranty, so I will just get her a new one. I noticed it easy to gift them. Honestly, I've been looking at prices for used kindle 2s, and they are rather... High. New is like $299, and I see used ones for $279. This looks like a great device, so I don't mind spending the extra $20 to ensure she has a warranty.
Now that I know you can get an extended within 30 days of buying it, I will get her an extended as well. Thank you! You all are great.

Welcome to KindleBoards, John, and what a great boyfriend you are! As for the warranties, you have two options, Square Trade www.squaretrade.com, and there are discount codes floating around, and the Amazon one. There's a thread here about the pros and cons of both. http://www.kindleboards.com/index.php/topic,10738.msg239271.html#msg239271Keep hanging around here, even if you are Kindle-less (we call those future Kindle owners ). Lots of suggestions for free books, many of which are available in formats you could read on your PSP, I'm sure! Betsy

Also, on the comics and manga font, there is an application called mangle that you can use to put on your kindle, with awesome results; at least for black and white comics, the Kindle does great!

How awesome for you to think of this gift - it's the one that keeps on giving lots!!! My Kindle 2 is one of the best gifts my husband has given me (of course we tried a few others before I finally got the one I had originally wanted, Kindle).
Even after you have taken the time to do all of your research, please don't be offended if your sweetie opts for different skins, covers, etc. There are so many to choose from and it does become an accessory game!
Welcome to Kindle Boards & have fun!

They have, thank you all for the kind words. Her kindle should be here on the 1st, but her case wont get here until the 4th. Very annoying. I am gonna surprise her with it, with a homemade greek dinner. It occured to me (a little too late), that she may have trouble not buying books. Didnt occur to me. Now that I know it can handle manga, I might get myself a kindle 1. Its much cheaper.

She come over in a bad mood today (though she won't admit it), but as soon as she saw her kindle, her eyes lit up. No pictures, unfortunately, but she couldnt be happier. I loaded up about 60 books (damned if it isnt easy to use), and she spent the rest of her time here reading harry potter and trying to wrestle it out of my, and her son's, grips. Its a much sleeker device than pictures show. I like it, so I put a K1 on my to buy list. Also, she already said she won't let me borrow it. I also wrote her some instructions on how to load books, play minesweeper, and import pictures. I put this on the system as a book, so she can access it at anytime. I dont want to do any major changes to the system just to get her custom screen savers, so i skipped over that stuff. The packaging kicked *ss. It was well designed and very professional looking. Thats probably where all the money they make off a kindle goes I love the powercable too, its awesome. I have to say, the CaseCrown is a nice case. Firm yet soft, its waterproof too. I got the doublepocket one so she wont lose her cord. The device is a smashing success, and I sent her the link for these boards. Hopefully, she will be on in a few days to join you. Thank you all for your kind words, and your help. This boards made picking a K2 for her easy.

I've been suggesting a Kindle for various family members for Christmas gifts (thinking ahead), but have been shot down by the masses so far. There must be someone.......
