I didn’t realize at first that the old man William ran into was Arch Bug.  I should have known when he asked for Ian.  He’s not giving up, but I didn’t expect him to.

I’m so glad that Roger’s invitation to continue the Gaelic lessons came at the same time as Bree becoming permanent at her job.

Rob Cameron brings Bree a bottle of wine.  Anybody think he’s hitting on her.  I think he’s going to be trouble.

Anybody think that Claire is ultimately going to operate on Henry and save his life?

General Fraser.  I know that Simon Fraser, son of the old fox, did join the British Army.  He finally did regain his estates, but not his titles.  I wonder if this is the same Simon Fraser.

Ian and Jamie leave Claire to be captured.  Shocked?  I guess they figure the British won’t hurt her as she’s a woman and a doctor.

Oh, goodness.  Claire is taking care of Walter Woodcock and his amputated leg.  Is this Mrs. Woodcock’s husband, the one who is caring for Henry Gray?  Sooner or later, everyone runs into everyone else.  Like John running into Thomas Paine.

Now we know why Percy is looking for Fergus.  Amelie Beauchamp’s son.  So, Fergus could be Claire’s ancestor?  Wouldn’t that be a kick?

OMG, the Comte St. Germain looms his ugly head, and only Jamie and Claire know what really happened to him.  I so hope Fergus doesn’t go back to France to claim his inheritance.  He’ll run smack dab into the French Revolution.

And the priest who married them was murdered in the streets.  Who thinks the Comte arranged that little mishap?

It was good to find out that Jamie would have fought for liberty even without a family to fight for.

It was really good to run into Hamish.  I’m very surprised that Jamie didn’t ask him right away about Jocasta and Duncan.

And now we run into Dr. Rawlings twin brother.  I was surprised that Claire told him exactly how his brother died.  I guess it was okay since River Run is basically gone, and Duncan and Jocasta have disappeared.

So, looks like Ian and William will be rivals for Rachel.  And it’s interesting that he knew that Bree could tell him things that she couldn’t tell Roger.  But I’m not sure I’m buying this.  Nothing really led up to Ian and Rachel falling in love.

Interesting that Denny Hunter fell in love with a woman in London that he couldn’t have because she wasn’t a Quaker.  Didn’t I say earlier that Dottie was using William as a cover to meet up with someone in America?  My radar is twitching.

Willie Coulter’s shade looms over Jamie and Claire.  He was the only one who witnessed Jamie killing Dougal.  Now what?  Blackmail of course.  And here comes Ian to defend his uncle.  Murder?  No.  Again, defending his loved ones.  But can Rachel live with that?  At least she’s taking care of Rollo.

I’m really worried about Ian.  He seems to have lost his place in the world, and every thing he does moves him further away from finding some peace.

How coincidental that Jamie is asked to bring Simon Fraser’s body back to the Highlands.  And once again, Jamie and William cross paths.  I don’t think I can take much more of this.

Sometimes methinks Roger thinks too much.  Little by little, things are coming his way, and if he truly has a calling, he needs to trust that God has a plan for him and will reveal it in his own time.

HAH, I knew the nuckelavee was William Buccleigh MacKenzie.  But what it means at this point, I really don’t know.  I was very surprised to find out he was a lawyer.

So much happened in this section.

I almost dropped Kindra when I read that St. Germain was Fergus' father. I was wondering too, if Fergus was an ancestor of Claire - funny how things work out. I still am not sure why Percy is so determined to find Fergus, maybe to make sure he doesn't inherit something Percy wants? I just don't trust the guy.

I am not surprised that Ian is in love with Rachel. But, he knows that Arch Bug would kill her, so he can't ever tell her. Maybe he will take her off to Scotland?

Gertie - I had not put Dottie with Denny Hunter. You may have something there. I have thought all along she was going to meet someone in America, and William's story was a cover.

William and Jamie keep getting closer and closer to a meeting. I want William to realize who his father is, in a way, but not if it would cause more problems and pain for Jamie. He has been through so much already.

William B McKenzie is the tramp! I wonder how he came through stones and how he ended up in Lallybroch?

No, I don't think we can trust Percy.  I'm almost tempted to read LJ and the Brotherhood of the Blade because that's where Percy is introduced.  On the other hand, I don't think I can take another LJ story.

That caught me completely by surprise.  Ian is still grieving for Emily, he's barely spent any time with Rachel, and all of a sudden, he's all passionate about her.

Coincidence upon coincidence.

Talk about dragging it out.  I didn't think about it being painful for Jamie, but you're right.  It would kill him if William rejected him and never forgave him.  If William remembers that Jamie is Mac the groom who gave him the rosary and named him James, he might be more accepting after the initial shock wears off.

It will become clear, but not for a while.  I hate how she keeps leaving us hanging even in the middle of the book.

I sure hope DG reads the reviews on Amazon.  A few clear five star reviews, some 1 star but mostly for price (I marked them as "not helpful"), but mostly ... we love Jamie and Claire, but this isn't about them and we didn't like the LJ and William parts, and too much cliffhanging, etc.

Finally finished part 5.  That was long and eventful, and at times boring, I guess I'm not into battle scenes.

I do think Roger should keep an eye on Rod Cameron.

As far as explaining the stones to the children, Roger is in a quandry.  If they don't know they could be pulled in by accident, if they do know they could be curious enough to go into them on purpose.

William let Claire go partially because of the debt he felt towards Ian, but he also remembered that Claire saved John's life at Fraser's Ridge.

What can John be feeling for Claire?  She may be the closest he'll get to Jamie's love.

Fergus acknowledges that Jamie is his father and a great man.  Wait until he finds out who his real father is.

I was shocked that Jamie was out fighting so soon after his finger was amputated.  Not very likely.

It seems as though Ian needs a woman to love.  I guess young attractive women were scarce at the time.  At least he's concerned that requiting his love might bring her harm.

So it is Willam Buccleigh MacKenzie who has traveled to the future.  I would imagine it would be much harder to fit into a future time than into the past.  What are Roger and Bree going to do with him??  He was the man responsible for Roger being hanged, can they get over that?

Part 5 is so jam-packed it's hard to know where to start!!
Gertie.... you sure called our tramp correctly!  Yet another time traveler.... but I sure have no idea how Roger - who is struggling enough as it is - is going to deal with the man who tried to execute him.
I really don't mind the love between Ian and Rachel and that part of the story line..... but we have nothing leading up to it.  Suddenly, Ian is so "bothered" that he doesn't trust himself to not ravage the young Quaker?
DG has a tendency to draw stories out... and out... and out.  This one, she dropped us in on Act 4 without the benefit of the first three acts.... so it seems abrupt and baffling.  Also, we just saw Ian finding out that his love for Emily is as strong as ever.  It just doesn't follow that all of a sudden he's deeply in love with Rachel.  In "lust" would make sense because he's a red-blooded young man (to say nothing of being related to Jamie) - but this great love for Rachel just doesn't ring true for me.
I've always thought that Lord John - in his own convoluted way - had some type of attraction to Claire.  Obviously, Jamie is his love.... and Jamie totally loves Claire.  So, I think LJ has, over the years, found things that he loves in Claire also.
Rod Cameron is definitely trouble.... he's already singing with the children and bringing wine to the house.
I wasn't happy with the way Ian was blamed for Mrs. Bug's death when he was protecting Jamie from being killed.  Now, Jamie and Claire are being threatened with blackmail and the man has been acting threateningly to them both.... Ian defends them..... and once again he's labeled a murder and he's fleeing for his life.  Jamie and Claire are both well respected, all they would have had to say was that he was threatening them and Ian acted in their defense.... I just don't get it.....
I had totally missed the Woodcock name connection.  Let's see... we think Rab McNab is married to LJ's brothel owner.... and now Henry's "paramour" is the wife of Claire's patient?  All of the criss-crossed connections in these books boggles the mind (at least mine).
I hadn't put Denny Hunter together with Dottie either.  But, the way DG is writing these books, we'll probably end up with William who supposedly wants to marry Dottie.... but he really loves Rachel (maybe)... and Dottie is coming to America to follow Denny.
DG needs to resolve the "let William know who his father really is" dilemma.  Making it full of suspense is one thing..... making William look like a dense dunce about it is another.  Clark even asked William about a possible family connection with our favorite Scot.  Literally everyone but William can see it.... it makes no sense that William wouldn't at least be wondering too.  I still think that William was old enough that he'd remember Mac his beloved groom that he spent so much time with.  If Jamie is anything... it's memorable because of his size, build, and coloring.  People see Jamie once and never forget him.  Willie saw Mac (Jamie) daily and was part of his life.  I remember people in my life that were important to me at a young age.... Willie would have remembered by now... and something would have "clicked" when Ian called him cousin....
We have all of the loose ends concerning Fergus' parentage and where that's going to take us too.  We have so many loose ends now.... I don't see how they'll all be resolved in one more book.  Book 7 has given us so many unraveling stories and connections that I can't help but believe that DG is going to have to leave some of them unresolved..... and that won't make me happy.  I need resolution and closure for things to sit right.... and I don't see that happening.  All we seem to be getting are more mysteries and complex situations hanging in limbo out there.

I don't know how I guessed that.  Maybe because it just never set right with me that Buck and Morag just left the county and we don't hear anything more about them.

Agreed.  It would have been nice to have some hint, especially, as you say, right after the emotional meeting with Emily.

Tinged with jealousy, of course.   Wink

He's just so smiley and happy-go-lucky to the point of smarminess.

Me, either.  They all know Ian and you would think that they would question what happened before trying to chase him down and lynch him.  It did set it up for Rachel to take care of Rollo.

It got to the point where I read every name very carefully and tried to remember them all.  Had I known, I would have written them all down.

I don't see anyone for William just yet.

Another thing that was dragged out.  At least there's a lot going on to keep us occupied.

I don't remember DG ever leaving us hanging out to dry like that.  Yes, suspense and breath-taking drama, but not "okay, I'll let all my fans hang from the cliff by the dirt under their fingernails for the next four years."

All I'll say to you is ... even with all the cliff hangers, there's a good ending.  You may sniffle a sniffle or two.

Part 5

So William and the Hunters part ways.  Maybe Wee Willie will find the battlefield after all.  But when he does, he will be facing an army that includes his father, his cousin and his friends.  He seems to be able to separate the war from friendship though.  I know Jamie will try to keep William safe.  But, as he said at Alamance when he was worried about Roger, sometimes you shoot somebody before you can see who it is.
William running into the old man gave me shivers.  Of course it had to be Arch Bug.  Someone needs to squash that Bug.
I know Jamie will try to keep William safe.  But, as he said at Alamance when he was worried about Roger, sometimes you shoot somebody before you could see who it was.

Sure she will but in this book that could take months.

General Fraser.  I know that Simon Fraser, son of the old fox, did join the British Army.  He finally did regain his estates, but not his titles.  I wonder if this is the same Simon Fraser.
I don't think so.  Though at 1st I got excited thinking it was.  I don’t think the real Simon Fraser was a Fraser of Lovet.  I like the details DG got right.  Arnold did specifically target Fraser and Timothy Murphy is the one who shot him.  Of course it is a pretty famous story.  An interesting note – Simon Fraser’s grave was marked by the park service but was moved after the supposed burial site was dug up and they found nothing.  The marker was moved down by the river.  I guess that means that his body was never taken back to Scotland.  But this way, Jamie, Claire and Ian have a way to get there.

So Claire is captured and needs to be saved, again.  Good thing Jamie has a hero complex.  And here is William, one of her guards; lucky for everyone.  I liked William’s description of Claire “the curly-wig giving orders like a sergeant-major”.  Looks like she didn’t heed Donner’s advice to act more afraid of men.

Quote
Oh, goodness.  Claire is taking care of Walter Woodcock and his amputated leg.  Is this Mrs. Woodcock’s husband, the one who is caring for Henry Gray?
I never made that connection.  It may have something to do with my sleep reading.

Hamish is back!  I never liked how he was forgotten in so many of the books.  Looks like he turned into a decent man but dare we forget he is a MacKinzie?
Quote
It was really good to run into Hamish.  I’m very surprised that Jamie didn’t ask him right away about Jocasta and Duncan.
So was I.  I guess it’s their turn to be forgotten.  I will just have to imagine they talked about Duncan and Jocasta after Claire went to bed.

Dr Rawlings twin brother shows up.  I guess everybody will show up at some time in this and the next book.  I never did understand why Dr Rawlings was so important to Claire since she never new him.  I’m glad she didn’t tell him how his brother died.

Quote
It was good to find out that Jamie would have fought for liberty even without a family to fight for.
  yes it was

It looks like DG is following the same plan for Ian and Rachel falling in love as she did for Roger and Bree.  In other words, just accept it because she isn’t going to try to build it up like she did for Jamie and Claire.

Denny and Dottie sitting in a tree?

I didn’t remember the name of the person who saw Jamie kill Dougal.  Of course he wants to blackmail Jamie.  I don’t suppose it would make any difference that it was self-defense and that Dougal had tried to kill Jamie before that.  Ian being chased as a murder was a surprise to me.  In a discussion of one of the earlier books, a question was asked about Ian traveling to the future if he were able to.  I think this story illustrates exactly why neither he nor Jamie should travel to the future even if they could.  Their way of managing their problems (I’m not saying they are wrong) would land them in Jail in the 1970’s.
Why did these people want to kill Rollo?  At least with Rachel taking care of him, he will be used to her when she and Ian get together.
Quote
I’m really worried about Ian.  He seems to have lost his place in the world, and every thing he does moves him further away from finding some peace.
I think he will find some peace in Scotland.  Being around family can help – it it’s the right family.

I am soooooooo tired of reading about how much Jamie and William look like each other whenever someone sees them together or when someone who knows Jamie (Claire and Ian) sees William.  I got it, they look alike, you can stop with the filler now.

The Fergus stuff:  There is too little of this or am I just not noticing it because it is mixed in with the LJ stuff.  I hope Fergus and Claire are related.  What will Fergus do when he finds out he is monetarily rich?  And what kind of trouble is that going to bring down on him and Marsali?

Bree and Roger:
Roger teaching again.  He is a pretty good teacher.  So what will it be: teacher? Preacher? Teacher-Preacher?  Preacher-Teacher?  Whatever he ends up doing, he will be good at it.
Rob Cameron is going to be trouble!  I doubt he has a thing for Bree, he is probably trying to put Bree and Roger off guard.
Why is Bree worried about Claire and Jamie being at Ticonderoga?  She has to know they got out all right; there are more letters and two books.
Quote
HAH, I knew the nuckelavee was William Buccleigh MacKenzie.  But what it means at this point, I really don’t know.  I was very surprised to find out he was a lawyer.
Yes, you were right.  The lawyer thing surprised me as well.
Hopefully this will give Roger a chance to confront and forgive Buck.  If he can forgive Jamie and Ian for giving him to the Indians there must be away for him to forgive his great great whatever grandfather.

His body could have been taken back to Scotland.  They moved the marker, but don't know where he is actually buried.  I read that DG knew about the gravesite in Scotland and thought that would be a good place to bury Simon for purposes of the story.  She also said this Simon Fraser wasn't the same Simon Fraser that was the son of the old fox.  Apparently, there were a lot of Simon Frasers.

I'm telling myself that emotions accelerate in times of war.  I think Ian and Rachel are a good match.

How long do you think aristocratic Dottie can stay a Quaker?  There's lot's more to it than changing your clothes.  Can she be a good little Quaker housewife, spinning and weaving, cooking and cleaning?  I think Denny better be a very successful doctor so she has someone to clean her Quaker gray silk clothes.  At least she can sew.

I like Rachel and Ian together and I hope they end up that way.  Accelerated emotions - I like it and I think I can make it work for me.
