OK, I confess, it made me laugh! (Only people whose opinion I care about can insult me.)

I'm with Betsy. . . . .it's their little attempt at humor. Makes them feel better. And, having lived in England for 3 years, most Brits I met were very friendly and loved having Americans around. . . .especially when I brought brownies to the neighborhood picnics!

Read the little blurb under their name? news, reviews, facts, and FRICTION. They know they are insulting, and they don't care.

Well I've read somewhere that the average European reads faster and with better retention and consumes app. five (?) times more books than the average American.

People who are buying the Kindle are not "average" Americans, by reading standards.

Seems to be an "equal opportunity offender!" Third sentence in the article reads:
"Europe still has a large number of people who read books and the Kindle was eagerly awaited."

Well, come on! I mean, the health care bill is like a thousand pages. I thought the article was amusing. I mean, if you take a look at the local news (or actually even the national news) any given day, you're sure to find someone that makes you want to facepalm. *ahem*

I laughed aloud when I read it and sadly understood the truth in that statement. The truth hurts. Statistics for this article were obtained from the following sources: National Institute for Literacy, National Center for Adult Literacy, The Literacy Company, and U.S. Census Bureau. http://trivani.wordpress.com/2008/07/13/illiteracy-in-america/

I have a hard time believing just the first set of bullet pointed "facts".

Anyone that really believes that Americans do not read anymore should just jump on a NY subway train. You will see every type from bike messengers to Moms to business professionals reading books and newspapers and yes even Kindles!

Very few of the people that I know read much of anything. My husband is one of the few people I know that reads news extensively, and even he only gets through maybe a dozen books a year.
