Hi, I am new here having been pointed in the direction of these boards from a link elsewhere online. I've been lurking for the past few days, reading up on the Kindle 2 International version; news, reviews, comments etc.
I have long envied the readers of America their Kindles and their easy access to a huge array of e-books. Now Australia is about to get one too, and it hasn't come soon enough for me! Mine is pre-ordered and I'm practically bouncing up and down in my seat in anticipation. In the meantime I am contenting myself with organising some Kindle bling. I've already ordered a Decalgirl skin (Wavedancers) and am trying to decide on a cover. The M-edge Go in red leather looks very, very swish and might make a nice match to the skin. A booklight might be on the shopping list too, but I'm not 100% sure I'd get a lot of use from it. Any other bling I should be considering?
The reactions from my family to my intended purchase were positive. My husband, a non-reader of anything but newspapers and jokes, and a San Francisco expat is highly excited about being able to read the SF Chronicle again. The selection of US newspapers to be had in small country towns in Australia is apparently quite poor.....actually, I believe they're non-existent. So he's happy. My 15 yo daughter almost managed to rupture my ear drum with her squeal as she looked over my shoulder at the Amazon advertisements for the Kindle. I am currently the "cool mother" for buying this new electronic gadget, and she seems to be starting an awful lot of conversations with "When we get the Kindle....." We? Definitely not we. But she reads a lot, she adores reading like I do so there may be another Kindle making it's way downunder eventually.
This morning as I walked out the door to work, I couldn't help but think how my days of being weighed down by books might be coming to a close. I took 3 books to work today. One I had almost finished and couldn't wait til tonight to read the final two chapters. One I am halfway through but not 100% sure I want to keep going with. And another I hadn't started as I wanted to dip into it today and get a feel for it before I begin reading it tonight. Bring on the Kindle, I say....bring it on!

We are so glad you found KindleBoards, Airan Gale! We have many areas that you probably will like. Have you been to The Book Corner yet? That's the area for discussions about books (naturally). That's also where you will find threads about books Recommended by our Members and a list of additional sites for Book Lovers. Then there is the Book Bazaar where our member/authors post about their books and hold discussions about writing, publishing and many other topics. That is also where you will find Bargain Books and even Free Books threads where you can find reading material at low or no cost! If you have a question about your Kindle or it's usage, check out the FAQ or the forum about Tips, Tricks and Trouble Shooting . Or, just ask your question. We have many helpful and knowledgeable people here at KB and we feel there is no such thing as a "dumb" question. Another popular place is Let's Talk Kindle, where all things in the Kindle world are posted about. Be sure and check out the Photo Gallery, where pictures of members, pets, flowers, landscapes or just almost anything interesting can be found. Have you been to the Accessories area? There you will see information about covers, skins, lights, bags, stands and many other items to allow you to personalize your Kindle. Looking to just kill some time while you are waiting for your Kindle or if you have your kindle, want to try something different? Try INFINITY Game - Word Association or The "INFINITY" Thread: KEEP POSTING...Ready, Set,... GO!!! in the Not Quite Kindle area. Sorry for the long post, but there is just so much to do, learn and like about KindleBoards that I just get carried away.

My wife and I were in Australia this past March for the first time. Loved it!
Anyway, I did notice many novels for sale in Aussie that were NOT available in the US. These were mostly Australian authors and settings, etc. I think it will take some time for those to get Kindle versions- but be patient. When the Kindle was first released about 23 months ago, there were 65,000 kindle books available in US amazon store. Now there is over 360,000. So in two years the number inceread by more than 500%. I think you'll see the same thing there.
By the way, you might find a weekly podcast devoted to the Kindle worth listening to. It's at thekindlechronicles.com. You can listen on the computer or even download it to your Kindle (you put it in the audible file of the Kindle). Enjoy.

Welcome Airan Gale to kindleboards. We are getting more and more Aussies on line here, that's pretty exciting. Some of them have the US kindles and seem to be doing quite well with them. You need a US address and credit card which won't work for all down unders but at least you will have your own international kindle! Where are you in Australia? We have some from Darwin, Melbourne and Canberra, but none from Sydney interestingly enough.

Anyway, I did notice many novels for sale in Aussie that were NOT available in the US. Thanks for the welcome everyone. So much to keep me occupied while I wait for my Kindle! Yes, there are a few very good Australian authors who don't seem to get published outside our shores. My best book of the year so far is one....."Jasper Jones", by Craig Silvey, however I've seen the digital version available in Dymocks bookstore....the only Aussie bookstore to sell e-books, so there's hope that it might be available more widely one day. Where are you in Australia? About 160 kms (100 miles) south east of Melbourne.

Hi Airan Gale, I know I'm resurrecting an old thread here, but your reference to Jasper Jones sparked me up. If you liked that, check out another Australian YA book about a boy in strife called "They Told Me I Had To Write This" by Kim Miller, published by Ford Street Publishing in Melbourne at about the same time as Jasper. (Not yet available for the Kindle.) Take no notice that the author's name is the same as mine, that's completely coincidental.

The good morning thread? I'll have to go looking for it. Until then, I see a few kilometers of the north west corner of Lake Macquarie out of my car window as I drive to work.

Welcome to the boards. I guess this is one more example of how spoiled we are in America. Look up all the free books you can get on Kindle. Good stuff. I actually wanted to release a book of scifi free on Kindle but the system does not allow it yet. So I had to settle for releasing the book at 99 cents. There is a huge amount of cheap but good quality reading you can put on your new Kindle. Have fun.
