In these pages everyday fishermen, pros, and journalists tell their stories of freak accidents, fishy attacks, pranks, idiotic decisions, eerie or unexplained incidents, and other jaw dropping, adrenalin-pumping calamities. The stories bring to life the strange possibilities that await us once we cast our lines into known and unknown waters.

Here are some of the characters you'll meet inside these pages:

* A sport fisherman who gets taken on harrowing underwater ride by an angry white shark.
* An adventure angler whose boat is over turned by a 200 lb Amazon-river catfish.

Hi all,

So we have a pretty creative bunch here and a lot of us have animated signatures and/or avatars.  Sometimes, when there are a bunch in a row it can become distracting.  Did you know that you can press the ESC and the animation will stop?  Works in both Firefox and IE.  You do have to press it each time you change the page.  I'd say try it here, but I don't have any animation on mine.  Smiley  Still I'm sure you'll find a thread where you can use it!!

Great tip.

I don't know if this is true or not.  I once read on another board, that too much animation can slow a board down.  While its not an issue now it could be in the future.  Does anyone know if this is correct?

From my experience, there are a few variables that can have an effect on page loading.
For example, if you upload an image that is very large and the program (or your browser, outside this board) has to "force" resize it, that can slow things down and even lock up a thread. If the animations are hosted on sites where there are server issues, that can also cause some issues.

If the animations were hosted by the board, it would be a problem. This board only displays links from other sites, so it should not be a problem.

Thanks.  I've always wondered.  It was stressed to the point that anytime I see animation, I almost panic. Cheesy

*sigh*

I thought I'd never have to see that animation again when I left AdventureGamers.

At first Ford had formed a theory to account for this strange behavior. If human beings don't keep exercising their lips, he thought, their mouths probably seize up.
After a few months' consideration and observation he abandoned this theory in favor of a new one. If they don't keep on exercising their lips, he thought, their brains start working.

Not that anyone I know would ever do this but, you can choose not to see Avatars or Signatures in your Profile.

True, but then you lose ALL the avatars, not just the animated ones.  Some have found the animated ones distracting, the ESC key is a good suggestion.  There's a few that I can only take for a few seconds myself, so I'm glad to learn of the ESC option!

This is a great thing to know.  Now, if I could just figure out a way to stop those marquee things from parading across the screen all the time, I would be set. Grin

Adding my thanks to all the rest! It's one thing to have an avatar that is animated, but what is REALLY distracting is when people have animation in or below their signature lines (especially if it is unusually large). Because that is right above/below messages and your eyes absolutely can't avoid it.

Mods---would it be possible to take a poll and see how many of us have a problem with so much animation? It seems like a good compromise might be to say it's ok with the avatars but maybe not in signature lines. Could we at least vote on this???

Thanks for the tip! There are some places I've wished I could turn off the animation. I have to say, I am one of those people that love all the animation and creativity but also like the tip that I can esc when I need too!
