Hi, My husband and I are considering buying each of our children and both our mother's a new Kindle 2 for Christmas.
I already have an account with my Kindle, but I was wondering if I register all their Kindles under my account, can I share all the books I have already purchased on theirs?
Only one of them actually has the ability to have their own account, but the other's either don't have a credit card/computer/not comp savvy in order to purchase their own books.
If I keep them under my account, how many times can I send a book to a kindle on my account?
Also, if something were to happen to me, can I designate one of the family members to be the owner of the account and can they just change the payment info on the account with their name instead of mine. And if they change the name, will they lose all the books that we had purchased up to that point? Can you leave the books you purchased to someone in a will?
Not sure if I am explaining myself very well on this but maybe someone can help me out. I really don't want to invest in 1400 dollars worth of Kindles if they are going to lose all the money invested in the books I have purchased for them on my account. I'm thinking that if they deactivate and start their own account, they will lose everything they have purchased through me up to that point.
Thanks

If you register all those Kindles under your account, then yes, you can share all the books you have already purchased from Amazon with them. They would just need to download the book from your archives to their device.
Most of the time, unless otherwise stated, a book can be shared on up to 6 devices; it can be downloaded an unlimited amount of times to any of those 6 devices.
As to account ownership I'm not exactly sure what would happen under those circumstances, but under no normal circumstances should books purchased be "lost" if they are stored at Amazon, they'll be there until the day Amazon shuts down, indefinitely in the interim.
Why would they deactivate and start their own account? If it's easier all around than you should all just share one account, though you should figure out who pays for what (perhaps using gift cards).

Remember too, with the new Kindle for PC, the existing iPhone iPod Touch app and the plans for other mobile devices, all these count towards the device total. Plus, remember that subscriptions can only be delivered to one device.

Glad you pointed that out. We have 5 Kindles and one iPod touch on our account. I completely forgot that the PC would also be considered one more device.

Thanks for all the input. I guess I would need to check with Amazon about account ownership and whether or not I can designate a family member who owns one of the devices on my account to change the account information to reflect their name and payment information. In regards to buying books on my account, I will be buying all the books and they will re-emburse me for the cost. I'll post here and let everyone know about what Amazon says about account ownership in the case of the account holder's death.

You don't need to designate anyone as far as I can tell. Amazon lets you change the name, email and credit card information on an account. All you need to do is leave your account name and password to someone. It's under "Settings". You can change your name and email address there. And I've changed credit cards several times on the account. Betsy

We have seven Kindles on one account, and when a new book comes out, I send it to the ones that want it. The only book I can recall that would not allow the six downloads was First Family. Every Kindle does not receive every book. We have different interests in our family...so, only a few books are sent to all six. The seventh is my DX.
