I know I am going to regret asking this but...

My husband (I love saying that) won a netbook at a golf tournament. We are traveling to Australia and New Zealand for our honeymoon. I would love to find a good backpack that I can use that has a compartment for the net book and its power cord, a mouse, and a portable CD ROM,  a compartment for my Kindle and all of its goodies, and some space for just food, tea and the like. I don't want anything huge because it is going to be my carry on and double as a purse when out and about.

I figured, why do the research when you folks probably have 9,000 possibilities lined up.

I used a messenger bag for my netbook and Kindle but you sound like you need something bigger.  Try the Pacsafe:

If I were in the market for a backpack, I would seriously consider one by Tom Bihn.

I love all of their stuff. If I traveled more, I would buy a ton of stuff from them. Did you notice the nice knitting bags? Perhaps they would be useful in the quilting world?

I really like the Tom Bihn cafe bags.  Haven't bought one (yet).

If you have an Apple store in your area and you don't mind paying a bit more than elsewhere, they usually have a nice selection of quality bags and backpacks that work with their small 13" laptops. That may be a bit big for your netbook, but since you're using it for more than just that, you might find the extra space helpful.

Beautiful!  Although quilters tend to have quilted totes.  Grin
