Hello,

Hopefully someone can help...
Recently we got a Kindle 2 for our daughter (on this messageboard, thanks BBMountain!)

Now, we would like to put pdf-files on the Kindle via USB. I have tried this, but it doesn't seem to work.
Also, although now there is - according to Amazon - wireless available in our region, when putting the Wireless "on", it doesn't seem to work.No connection available so it seems.

The question is, is it possible at all to get pdf-files on a Kindle 2 via USB from a computer? And if so, how to do this?
And does anyone know why the Wireless - which is available? - doesn't seem to work?

Thanks for any help!

Hello white knight!

The Kindle does not read PDF's natively.  So before you load them you first need to convert them to the Kindle format.  Calibre, and MobiPocket Creator (Pro version) are two programs that are popular with folks here for doing that.  You should also be able to send them to Amazon for conversion to your @free.kindle.com address and they'll send you back a link with the converted file.

Many have reported that the conversion process is not foolproof.  If the original PDF has a lot of specialized formatting and/or pictures, etc. you'll loose much of that formatting.  But if it's primarily text it should do a satisfactory job.  You get a bit more control if you do it yourself.

Once you've converted it to a compatible file format, you need to move the file into the Documents folder on the Kindle so that it will show up on the home screen and you can open it.

Can't answer the wireless question. . . .my best suggestion there is to contact Kindle CS.

You might check this thread from Switzerland regarding the wireless.

I downloaded a programme called Calibre onto my PC. Then open the program and select the PDF you want to add to your kindle.  Plug in the Kindle to the PC and Calibre will detect it,  you can then select to transfer your PDF to your kindle; it will ask you if you want to change it to kindle format (mobi) and when you click yes, it will translate it and pop it on to your kindle.

I have done this four times in the last week and no problems at all!

I think some might get into problems when Calibre is downloaded onto the kindle directly.  And I haven't bothered with the Amazon system at all.
