Product Description
This literary thriller revolves around Parker Sloane. When he returns from a dismal foray into third-world cash-smuggling to his childhood home in the woods of New England, it seems he’s seeing his country and his blended stepfamily for the first time—and finding both just as twitchy, desperate, paranoid and unpredictable as the underworld types he thought he’d escaped.

Before he can even unpack, Parker goes head-to-head with his relatives—his tyrannical stepfather, seething younger brother, newly evangelical mother, and his alluring younger half-sister Rita—and with the demons they never exorcised.

Delicately but disastrously, Parker attempts to keep his family from imploding, unaware that they have their own plans for escape. The Moon in Deep Winter combines the dark comedy of the Coen brothers with the doomed lyricism of Denis Johnson, creating an airtight world of homicidal family dysfunction.

Has anyone downloaded the Bible on the free books thread?  I think it is called "The Voice" and it has chapter navigation -- it cost $0.00 so I downloaded.  I love to read different versions of the Bible.  Anyone else read any of it yet?

Also, any Joyce Meyers' devotional readers here?  I am torn as to whether to download her devotionals.  I really love to listern to her podcasts, but sometimes I find her books a bit simplistic.

Finally, I downloaded the free preview of Phillip Yancey's readings for December.  I love Yancey -- have read all his books.

Anyone else reading anything in the way of devotionals that are contemporary?

I downloaded it, but I have not read it.  It was put together by several leaders of what has been called the Emergent Church movement.  They developed it almost like a script to be read in public settings.  I do not know, however, how they handled the translation or paraphrase of the NT itself.

I have read part of his The Jesus I Never Knew and am in the process of reading his Rumors of Another World.  I like what I've read by him so far.  I have not, however, read any of his devotional.

Unfortunately, I don't do well with devotionals.  I've tried doing them, but I never actually manage to stick with it.  I really don't know why.  Maybe I need more self-discipline.  LOL

I am with Martin, I down load devotions, but after a few days do something else.

I have lots of free Bibles, and jump from one to another so they do get use.  My favorite is Halley's Bible Study that Martin posted in the free book thread and the Christian Book thread, and I think somewhere here as well.

Personally I prefer a structured day by day which keeps me on track.

I'm doing Beth Moore's Jesus: 90 Days With the One and Only as my daily devotional right now.  I love Beth Moore's Bible studies, and this is nice because it breaks her study down into bite-sized chunks.  I've got about 15 days to go, so I haven't figured out what I'm going to do next yet.  I may try to do a one-year Bible in 2010, or else I'll probably do one of John MacArthur's Bible studies next.  The MacArthur studies aren't broken down into days, but I just do a bit each day.

I've read one of Beth Moore's books ("A Heart Like His" about King David) and loved it.  I'm goingto check out the one you've mentioned.  Thanks for reminding me about Ms. Moore's books!

I'm working in a workplace training and assessment organisation in Australia. I specialise in the TAA40104 Cert IV Training and Assessment qualification and often travel to Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney to run courses. I also manage TAA40104 Online. Also, if you're interested in workplace training - TAA40104 is about to be replaced. You'll find more info at Certificate IV Training and Assessment Questions.
