The Moon in Deep Winter

Kindle Edition published 2008-01-10
Bestseller ranking: 460964

Product Description
This literary thriller revolves around Parker Sloane. When he returns from a dismal foray into third-world cash-smuggling to his childhood home in the woods of New England, it seems he’s seeing his country and his blended stepfamily for the first time—and finding both just as twitchy, desperate, paranoid and unpredictable as the underworld types he thought he’d escaped.

Before he can even unpack, Parker goes head-to-head with his relatives—his tyrannical stepfather, seething younger brother, newly evangelical mother, and his alluring younger half-sister Rita—and with the demons they never exorcised.

Delicately but disastrously, Parker attempts to keep his family from imploding, unaware that they have their own plans for escape. The Moon in Deep Winter combines the dark comedy of the Coen brothers with the doomed lyricism of Denis Johnson, creating an airtight world of homicidal family dysfunction.

My Kindle 1 was stolen from my car along with my purse.  Do I have to do anything other then deregister it to protect my account?  I plan on buying a new one today but I want to make sure I have closed the loop on the stolen one.

Thanks,

Joanna

Sorry to hear about your misfortune!   Sad  I believe all you have to do is deregister it.  I'm sure more experienced Kindlers than myself will speak up if there are  more steps that are needed.

You might notify Customer Service that it was stolen, it might not do any good, but who knows.

Absolutely deregister.  I'd also contact Amazon and let them know it was stolen.  They can track it anyway if some honest citizen finds it discarded somewhere, and it's doubtful they'll follow up if someone tries to register it, but I'd do it anyway, just to make myself feel like I'd done everything possible.

Sorry to hear it was stolen.   Some people just stink.  Angry

My name was in the personal information section.  Kindle customer service said to deregister and get a police report but there is nothing else that they do.

Thanks everyone.

If it's not already posted on craigslist, post a message there explaining how yours was stolen with serial number.  Might prevent an honest person from purchasing it.  If it is already there, contact new owner to see if you can buy it back at a discount.

Worth a try.

Well, according to the police, after they stole my purse it seems that they stole a car.  I guess I can be thankful that they just took my purse.

New kindle is on the way and will be here in time for christmas.

I'm so sorry to hear about this terrible situation.
Today I went to a couple of stores to pick up some things.
As I was walking into the store I was a bit worried about someone trying to break into my vehicle.
I have a few more things for gift giving that will happen over New Years.  I think I'll be doing that on
Amazon.  No driving to the store, parking, fighting the crowds.

Congratulations on your new K2.

The reason the police think the robbers were the same for my purse and the car is that they tried to use my credit card, it was denied, and stole a car out of the parking lot.  The police came by my office to question me based on the card use.  They thought that I might have been the car thief.  Luckly I had filed a police report for the purse or I might have had a larger problem.  It was a stressful few minutes with the detectives. Shocked

I hope you included the kindle in your police report!  Insurance should cover it then.  Good for your credit card!  Sometimes mine gets blocked in Mexico, but that's fine, I would rather go through the hassle of calling them than having to worry about fraudulent charges.

So sorry to hear that! A friend of mine just had her Kindle stolen too. She was the first person I ever saw with a Kindle and I was shocked to see her with a paperback book the other day. She hopes to get a Kindle 2 for Christmas.

Wow that really sucks!

Check with your insurance company.. the loss might be covered by either your auto or your homeowners/renters policy.

I'd freak over those losses.. and losing my Oberon cover as well!

sorry to hear that it was stolen. But you're right, at least it wasn't your car. Not that anyone needs that type of stress over christmas regardless.

Hi, So sorry to hear that about your kindle.... Cry
well...  my husband's car got stolen on Christmas Eve in 2003 in Honolulu, Hawaii (we used to live there...)
He had so many gift in back seat and parked at mall for more gifts and watch movie with my oldest daughter.... few hours later.. it was gone...       but it's a small island... soon as we reported to police they already found it in other side of island... he got rested...
but he took all our Christmas gifts... except!!!   "Christian CD"   Shocked
I think that was the most he needed to take with him!!!

after that happend... I don't leave that much stuff in a car at all.
especially now with Kindle, iphone, pures etc....   I always take all even just go in few minutes stops... even my purse is heavy.... Wink

Hope you enjoying your new kindle!!
Merry Christmas and happy new year!!!

Amazon has records of Kindle serial numbers. When one is reported stolen I don't know why they can't prevent that Kindle from being re-registered.

Would the Kindle even be usable without reregistering it with Amazon? (Other than the books that are currently on it) If that is the case, and you report it stolen to Amazon, wouldn't they have a moral imperative NOT to facilitate that Kindle's continued use?

it is usable without being registered. You can DL tons of books via USB cable to it from any number of sites.
Amazon does not brick it, because they have no proof you did not sell it via ebay or something, and are now claiming it stolen.
