I can sometimes see "ghost images" on my screen after I've shut it off. Even sometimes when it has been off for hours and I am about to restart it. Is this normal or do I need to contact Amazon about this?
Also, a few more newbie questions.... (forgive me) Is it better to shut it down between usage, or put into sleep mode (screen savers)? When charging the battery is there a recommended way to do this? For instance, wait until the battery is drained completely or nearly so; or to charge whenever you see it draining like say a quarter of the way?
Thank you in advance!

I can't answer all your questions but i do know that putting it to sleep seems to be the preferred method rather than shutting it off completely. I have had mine since the beginning of last year and I let it sleep in between reading. I also let mine get to the battery low warning before I charge it and it hasn't given me any problems at all.
As for the ghost writing, I have seen that for a few seconds when it is first woken up but as soon as I turn the page it goes away.If yours is doing it for hours, it may be real problem.

There were tricks we did with eggs, as children, to show how they were, in reality, tiny load-bearing marble halls; while the beat of the wings of a butterfly in the right place, we are told, can create a hurricane across an ocean. Hearts may break, but hearts are the toughest of muscles, able to pump for a lifetime, seventy times a minute, and scarcely falter along the way. Even dreams, the most delicate and intangible of things, can prove remarkably difficult to kill. -Fragile Things, Neil Gaiman

The ghosting is normal. You can fix it by clicking Alt + G while the Kindle is on. If it has a bit of ghosting while you turn it off, it is fine.
Leave the Kindle in sleep mode, unless you are going to be storing it for a while. It draws almost no power in sleep mode.
Do not wait until the battery is drained before charging. Most of us charge at somewhere between 25% and 50%.

thank you for your answers pidgeon, I've been wondering about some of those q's myself and as I'll probably be looking to charge it in the next few days, I feel better about not draining the battery

I never turn mine off, I do not think I have turned it off, since I first turned it on! There are a lot of little tricks, like the refreshing trick (alt+g) You can also choose the formatting you prefer by hitting shift, alt+ the number keys, each number will format the page differently.

Don't worry about being kindless if customer service has you return it, you will have a replacement before you have to send it back, as in next day, and you can use their box. Amazon Kindle Customer Service is the best They must have a lot of kindlers working for them that understand the trauma and stress of being kindleless
