Hey,

I think i want to get a spare wall charger for traveling. Has anyone tried using the non-OEM chargers that you can buy from eBay? I'm really curious because i want to make sure that the charger won't do any damage to my Kindle 2.

I was thinking about getting this: http://cgi.ebay.com/WALL-HOME-CAR-CHARGER-USB-CABLE-FOR-AMAZON-KINDLE-DX-2_W0QQitemZ300382324370QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item45f02e8692

It would be better to buy an extra charging cable from Amazon, instead of going the non OEM route, in my opinion. If you went the latter route, it could damage your Kindle, as well as void whatever warranty you have, if any.

I don't think it is wise to buy a charger from eBay.

If you want a travel charger, either get an original from Amazon, or go with an iGo system (many are available at Amazon) with a K2 tip. I've had an iGo for years now, and I have tips for all my small electronics so I only need one charger when I travel.

I have never had occasion to test this, but it is my understanding that use of a non OEM accessory is not, alone, a legal reason to void a warranty.

Seconding the vote for the iGo chargers.  This is similar to what I got for my K1 a few months ago - $12.95 for the package.  I added tips for my iPhone and now my Sony Pocket reader.  Now need to add a tip for my husband's K2.

The kindles shipped to Australia were shipped without any charger. I understand that Amazon won't ship chargers here. So we have little choice other than use a third party charger unless we lug the laptops around with us. The iPhone charger for instance drains the battery but once connected to a charger that does work (many in Oz will not) then the kindle is fine again.

I've used the 5v charger that came with my Sandisk MP3 player, which has a USB port for plugging in the Kindle cable.  The Kindle 2 charger puts out 4.9 volts at 0.85 amps; 5 volt chargers putting out 1 amp with USB ports are fairly common and should not burn out your Kindle.  Most computer USB ports deliver 5 volts.  I would be cautious about going over 5v/1amp.
