I received this email just moments ago, and am wondering what the heck is this all about? Anyone else get this?
Eric
Email begins here:
Greetings,
An inexpensive LEGAL service, due to be launched in the next few weeks, will enable First Sale rights (e.g., the ability to sell or loan an ebook to any other Kindle user). To help debug the application code the developers desire a few DRM-protected Kindle ebooks from different Kindles. If you are a Kindle owner and would like to support their efforts, and in exchange be granted special privileges/pricing, please send one or a few ebooks, your Kindle Model and Serial Number to me at:
link removed per forum rules
I will forward your replies. The developers will return the favor by swapping ebooks with the other respondents so you may verify their modified ebooks read properly on your Kindle and acquire a few new ebooks in the process.
Thanks in advance for your support
C.F.

Per forum rules, I've removed the link to the person advertising. KindleBoards does not permit discussions of how to remove DRM. Nor do we permit links to sites that provide how to.
Thanks for understanding.

No problem... I didn't realize there was that rule. I am not interested in removing DRM, I just thought it was an odd solicitation. I am not sure how the person even got my email address or knew that I had a Kindle. It sounds like a Nigerian email scam... Eric

Interesting that they need your serial number. Can they access you r account with that? It sounds like a total scam to me that might even give them access to your library. Could they actually access your amazon account and credit card on file with tat info?

With a Kindle serial number, a nefarious person could register a Kindle. . . .not sure if they could de-register one if they didn't know to what account it was already registered. I understand the serial number is needed for the scripts they use to find the PID. Even if it is "legitimate" (and I use that term loosely ) Amazon has said that running such scripts is against Terms of Service. They filed suit last summer against MobileRead and required them to take down all reference and linkage to such scripts. So they are serious about it.

If they're so invested in removing DRM coding, don't they have their own Kindles to mess with? Why do they need other people's? I wonder if they're using the serial number to get your credit card number.

As far as I know, there is no way to get a CC number just knowing the Kindle serial number. It'd be easier to hack into your home network and get your Amazon log in info that way.
I expect what they are offering is a DRM stripping service for those who'd like to do that but are not technologically capable. Legal? Debateable. Against Amzon's Kindle Terms of Serivce? Absolutely.

The reason they need your serial number is to crack the DRM. You can't remove DRM without it.
