Very Cool Harvey, no pun intended..lol I have a Cool-er and despite bad reviews I love mine. Haven't had any problems so far and it's very lightweight and simple to use. I also have a K1 but I let my DH take it to Afghanistan with him and he is enjoying it very much. He is even sharing it with his Sgt. lol. Thanks for all the videos you are showing us.

Very interesting, Harvey! The website is www.cooler-ebooks.com and the price shown for pre-order in the US on the website is $249. Their website has books that apparently can be used on various ereaders (not Kindle). Wonder if I can read library books on it....going off to check... EDIT: The site says it can read PDF, EPUB, FB2, RTF, TXT, HTML, PRC, JPG AND MP3. Kindled Spirit--have you looked at any PDFs on yours? If so, how does it do? Betsy

Now that looks like it could be viable kindle kompetition. Love the different colors, but just don't know which color I would get though, so think I'd stick with my kindle.

Isn't PRC for kindle?
PRC is MobiPocket, which the Kindle format is based on. AZW is the main Kindle format available on Amazon. You should be able to get DRM-free .PRC ebooks from places like Fictionwise that will work on the Cool-ER as well as the Kindle.

When I first saw this ereader, I thought it was terrible because their store has WAY high prices for books. But after some research, I think I understand that you can buy books from any store that has Adobe DRMed ePub books. And so you also have to install the Adobe DRM desktop software to transfer the books. Have I got this right, Harvey? So, for instance, you could buy books from Fictionwise? How about from B&N?
The cooler website isn't real helpful with figuring this out because they probably want you to buy from them. But I think this is the wrong tactic. They should advertise the fact that you are not forced to buy DRM books from them - you can buy them from several places.
I do think this is the direction ereaders will go in - allowing people to buy DRM books from multiple places, so that if you see a nice ereader you like, you don't have to worry about your library transferring.
Don't get me wrong - I love my kindle, and don't mind (for now) having to buy my books from Amazon (yes, I know that non-DRM books can be gotten from other places but I mean DRM books like latest bestsellers). But I bet in the future, even kindles will somehow allow you to read DRMed ePUB books that have been bought elsewhere.

I don't know ... I'd be a bit hesitant about the buttons on the side, where they might be accidently pushed while reading.
Kindled Spirit - have you found the side buttons to be an issue at all?

no not at all...you do have to put a little pressure on the buttons...So it would be difficult to turn pages accidently.

At $249, that would be a good deal, I think. I'm in the market for an ePub reader this year and this looks good, though a bit large for carrying around.

Nice video, Harvey. At $249 without internet seems like a loser. Note that www.thekindlechronicles.com has an excellent interview with the CEO of Cooler which is well worth listening to. This company is VERY BIG overseas and is a major player.

You're right, Kindle can read non DRM'd prc files, don't know if the books they sell are DRM'd or not. I was going by the ereaders they list on their site and missed the "prc" in the files, thanks! Betsy

Weight is 178 grams or 6.3 oz compared to the Kindle 2's 10.2 oz. Like the lightness. I'd also like to know if it will work with OverDrive (the system our library uses...)
It intrigues me because of the weight (and yes, the color), the landscape and portrait orientations and the ability to read PDFs as well as ePub.

I know that they said the Cool-er is available in the US from QVC.com. I just went to QVC’s web site and out of a possible 5 star customer rating the product is at 1 ˝ stars with 148 reviews posted. The first three reviews all mention poor/slow customer service. That is not good. I think there is room for more e-readers in the market just so that “competition” will keep Amazon, Sony and others striving to keep improving their product. I do like the size and colors of the Cool-er. It kind of looks light a large I-Pod Nano.

Thank you for posting this and all the other videos.
One thing is becoming more and more clear.... Amazon will need to open up the kindle accept more file formats and its book store to provide them. Being so closed an proprietary is going to hurt amazon in the long run.

I agree with you - Amazon will have to open up and use a standard DRM (no way DRM in general goes away any time soon). On the other hand same tightly controlled closed approach works wonders for Apple so far.

Yes, but Apple has now removed the DRM from their music. Any itunes store purchases could be converted (for a fee of course) to the open format. Now if Apple would only let me burn a DVD I can watch on the player connected to my tv.

I do encourage everyone to go to the QVC site and look at it's reviews. I frequent the boards there, have for years now and there was quite a stir over these COOL-ER e-readers. It was a Todays Special Value just before Christmas and people were sending them back left and right. We Q-enablers, there are quite a few of us here now (waves to my Q buddies) were only too happy to gush about our kindles and convinced a lot of them to buy kindles! Of course they are very happy....we just KNEW they would be. Not at all trying to bash a product here, just wanted you all to know the buzz from people who just recently have tried them. Maybe it's just a matter of some bugs to work out? Was unbelievable how disappointed customers were over this.

Now if Apple would only let me burn a DVD I can watch on the player connected to my tv. DRM problem isn't of Apple making. They had a long fight with music publishers insisting on DRM and same applies to DVD burning. Amazon is in the same boat with book publishers which currently don't look like giving up on DRM. It's not up to Apple or Amazon to decide willy-nilly upon DRM - publishers hold rights and can insist on terms as preconditions. I'm not apologetic for the industry but I still think that ultimately this unfortunate for honest consumers DRM situation all boils down to people easily and en mass feeling that they can pirate (steal) electronic media. It's too easy to shed blame on Big Bad Business this or that freeing consumers from any responsibility.

Len Edgerly interviewed two execs at Cool-er on his podcasts last week. He asked the woman (I don't recall her name) what advantages the Cool-er has over Kindle. She said you can share have the books on up to 6 devices. Now that's the same as Kindle! The man he interviewed put Amazon down for selling books at a loss and said it was dishonest. He also criticized Amazon for charging for emailing items to your kindle. He said that they "side-load" PDFs. Well, hello, you can do that on your kindle too.
That was the worst of what I heard. I do think it's a nice looking device and I love the colors. If the price were competitive with the Sony ($200 or below), I'd consider it for library ebooks (assuming you can use it for them).

Perhaps he is not aware that a lot of stores sell loss leaders (like canned tuna) to get people into the stores. I have no doubt that Amazon has made plenty of revenue off of me in the last several years.

I met the CEO of Interead while at CES. His staff were friendly in the booth, but he got a little frosty when I told him I was from KindleBoards. He said that they view what Amazon is doing as "morally wrong", in an apparent reference to Amazon restricting your eBook purchases so that they're readable only from your Kindle.
I think that is a common viewpoint from the Kindle competitors at CES; someone else I spoke with spoke heatedly about Amazon's plans for "global domination".
