The Moon in Deep Winter
by Lee Polevoi

$0.99
Kindle Edition published 2008-01-10
Bestseller ranking: 460964

Product Description
This literary thriller revolves around Parker Sloane. When he returns from a dismal foray into third-world cash-smuggling to his childhood home in the woods of New England, it seems he’s seeing his country and his blended stepfamily for the first time—and finding both just as twitchy, desperate, paranoid and unpredictable as the underworld types he thought he’d escaped.

Before he can even unpack, Parker goes head-to-head with his relatives—his tyrannical stepfather, seething younger brother, newly evangelical mother, and his alluring younger half-sister Rita—and with the demons they never exorcised.

Delicately but disastrously, Parker attempts to keep his family from imploding, unaware that they have their own plans for escape. The Moon in Deep Winter combines the dark comedy of the Coen brothers with the doomed lyricism of Denis Johnson, creating an airtight world of homicidal family dysfunction.

WOW!!!  It is all gorgeous!!!!  Of course green is my favorite color so I'm partial to the jade.  Do you ever see any jade rings of any type?

I also love the little agate Buddha necklace.

Tsunami hit today around 4:00PM. No damage to report. They did an evac of anyone below 30 feet over sea level, but it was just in case! All is well here...
So I went over to the auction today...pictures will follow tomorrow after I sort out the huge bag of stuff I bought...I am just really hoping you like it because other wise I will be stuck with about $300 in jewelery! Did someone ask for Lavender jade...'cuz I got some of that, and a little yellow jade too. Anyone interested in a jade tiger? I couldn't help myself, he was calling my name and saying "find me a good home!" Don't worry, if no one wants him, I will not feel put out to add him to my personal collection...I got jade bangles and whole lot more! Don't worry, I didn't forget the pearls!
OK, I am off to bed, have a great day everyone!  Wink
(Yeah, I know, I'm mean to leave you all hanging like that...)

I am interested in lavendar jade, chocolate pearls, single strand, and I mentioned a buddha statue.  But I will wait patiently to see what you have.
SO glad you are safe Maryann.

The pictures are so wonderful!  I am still looking for a jade Buddha, but one without the background.  The ones I have seen usually have a bigger belly (maybe American-ized??)

I am interested in your "old jade" strand.  What is the length & price and do you have a close-up pic.

Glad everything is good and excited about seeing your latest finds, especially the lavendar jade pieces.

Very interested in seeing a picture of the jade tiger..can you also give the measurements and price?  I have a small tiger collection and would love to add to it.

No drop pearls...didn't see a single one. I am uploading pictures now. The old jade strand in the picture is in my personal collection, but I can get more. They are expensive, around $75, but the quality and beauty is well worth it if you like them. There are a couple pieces of jade I would be willing to part with, mostly because they are popular carvings and I would be able to get another one. The white Buddha is one, it was $80 and I can ship it for $10. The Gwan Yin is another...she was an amazing deal at $55. I have two more that I got yesterday. I have pics coming. One is a tiger that was only $120, he went cheap because he has a natural fissure in his front leg, but his color is really beautiful! The other is the god of longevity. He has a lot of lavender in him and I got him for $85.  All of the jade statues would be worth $500-$1200 easily in the states. There is a ban on importing jade, so it cannot be sold there and has a far higher market price. Even here where it is easy to get, it can go for hundreds. The good news is, I go the auctions often enough that I can pick up some nice bits when there aren't any collectors around. The larger Buddha carvings, with the big bellys go for around $180 for a nice one, but on occasion I have seen them go for as little as $75 depending on the size and color. I will keep looking!
Still waiting on the pics...I will return when they are done.

The tiger is 7" from nose to tail, and 3" tall

Mongolian Silver bangles. The small ones are $11 each or $20 for the pair, the larger ones are $17 each.

Little bit of everything. Long black strand w/earrings $17, Multi strand w/earrings $9 (special find!), Triple strands: Pink w/earrings $17, white $15, I also have black for $15, Tigers eye bead bracelet small $8 large $10. Everything else is in other pictures...

Lavender Bangles! These are lucky buys! First though, the butterfly is jade $17, and the little flowers are CZ rings with stretchy beaded bands each $5 or $8 for both. I am having a hard time letting go of these bangles...I can get more though...so, the large one was $47 it is solid lavender jade. it's heavy and beautiful, and I am going to get as many as I can! This is the first one like this that I have gotten. It is from deep in the mine so the stone is very solid and the color is just amazing! The smaller one is also very solid and has some carving on it. I got it at $37. It has a slightly mottled color that is really neat. I actually wore it for most of the auction...it was one of the first items I got so I went and paid for it and put it on! It's so lovely!
I have one more that i don't have pictured. It is also carved but the color is even more incredible. It was much more delicate and a "younger" jade. It cracked. I was planning on having it cut, capped, and hinged so it could still be worn. It is almost pink in color. I will have to take a picture of it. It cost a lot though, even though it is broken the color is so rare that I had to fight to get it at the auction. I paid $70 for it! Still, if taken to a jeweler and fixed, it would just be an amazing piece!

Green bangle and yellow jade beads. Darn, bad pic...the red gems are CZ's, the pendant is a star...hard to see that though! It's a little cracked at the top, but it was only $5 so I got it for fun, it's still pretty and great for a young girl! The earrings go with it. The green bangle is a small. Good color, kind of an average bangle for jade, but it's only $22 and it is solid jade. I like the dark spot on it, makes it a little different. The yellow beads are all jade and the little figure on it is a "dragon pig" I have no idea how to spell what they call it here (pixou?)...it is to protect against bad chi. Kind of a personal defender. Cute and it was only $12! The golden pearls next to it are lovely! And I got them for $17! It's the first time I have seen them come up in that color.

God of Longevity, don't ask me to spell his name! I will have to look it up in a minute! He has a great lavender tint to him and the green spots are just deep green and beautiful! Almost the Imperial green color. He's $85 plus $10 shipping.

(my hands are starting to cramp...)

Here's the tiger! It is year of the tiger, so they are pretty popular right now! You can see the very cool dark green streak on this side, he is beautifully carved. He's 7" long and 3" tall.

Here's his other side. Almost pure white but in the right light you can see tinges of pale lavender and very light apple green. He's really beautiful and you can see the details in his face and even the striping on his side. I got him for $120 and I can ship him for $10.

This is why he's only $120...it is a fissure in the stone that has shifted a bit. He has a broken leg, poor baby. It's not very noticeable unless you look for it and it makes what would normally be a $200-300 piece of jade a lot more affordable. As far as affecting the value of the jade...notice the tag for "retail value"? That would have been doubled without the fissure, but the "retail value" is so inflated that when it comes to actual value, it doesn't really mean much at all.

A really nice happy Buddha! Double sided carving on a choker style silk rope necklace. I have another picture that gives a better idea of his size and shows him from the side.  If anyone is interested I can send it. He's $30.

And that's a fuzzy close up of the white jade Buddha. He's $80.

I will get more pictures if anyone is interested...right now I am going to take my son out to play!
Have fun looking!

Mary Ann
I would like the God of Longevity.  that is spectacular.  Also interested in one of the lavendar jade bangles.  I love the big one, but my wrist is on the small side, so let me know what you think.

Oh my!  How gorgeous.

I bought the other strand of black pearls - sight unseen!  I sure hope they are a single strand just like these!  I didn't ask if they were single or multiple strand!   Shocked   Do you recall?  because if they are not (single strand) and you haven't mailed them yet, I might be interested in a swap.

It is a single strand, but not the long strand, the pears are darker black and about twice the size of these.

AHHHH! I have been responding to you all day for two days now! I hope I got everyone! If not please PM me and I will get back to you...Little up date...the large lavender bangle, god of Longevity, black pearls, multi pearls, Gwan Yin, flower CZ rings, and the white triple strand are all sold. The tiger, white Buddha, gold pearls, silver bracelets, tiger's eye bracelets, jade butterfly, and pink triple strand are all still available.

One of the reasons I have been taking so many Amzon gift cards, is so that I can buy my husband a KDX without him knowing! It's my sneaky way of transfering the money! I made it to my mark last night and the DX will be ordered tonight! Thank you all sooooo much! I love doing this and I am having a great time! I am so glad you are enjoying it too! I love hearing about you getting your packages and enjoying your new goodies! I am a little nervous about the jade, just because of it's value, so if you order jade I am suggesting insurance. To insure them for $500 costs about $4, so it's not bad and at least it will be a portion of the value. Some of the jade I have is worth a few thousand dollars on the open market. I would hate to see it broken, lost, or stolen. It would break my heart! I will happily share with all of you, I just want to make sure it is protected!
Ok, I am going to go play with my son, and clean the house and then I need to go work on my home business, which has been ignored for several days now...LOL!

I'd like the green jade bangle with the dark spot.

Funny thing is, I've never liked jade all that much, but your comment about the dark spot must've stuck in my mind, because last night I dreamed that I was wearing that one and someone commented (in the dream) that it matched my hand  --  I have a dark birthmark in the middle of the back of my hand.

Dreams are weird...  now I really feel like I need that bangle.   Roll Eyes Cheesy

I just got my black jade Buddha bracelet today and it's beautiful - much nicer than the pictures depicted.  I would love additional ones like this or similar in style - stretchy beaded or carved.  Even my husband loves it and he's not a jewelry person at all!

That is great to hear...makes what I am doing well worth the time invested!  I will keep my eyes open, they aren't common, but I see them every so often, and sometimes in other styles as well. Most of the rare, or high end jade is used for carving the gods in one form or another. If anyone likes cabbage, they do have carvings of cabbagge fairy often too and always in really beautiful jade. It is a sacred plant here because it grew when noting else would during a famine. It literally saved the population of Japan. Corn also, as it was the next to start growing, along with peanuts. They have carvings of all of them and often very nice ones!

Just to let you all know, everything is on it's way. I have insurance slips for the jade, if there is an issue at all let me know and I will send it to you along with the reciepts. I hope I wrapped them well enough to protect them. Enjoy them, and please let me know when you recieve them!

They don't have to be Buddhas, but anything carved and jade...or even pretty much anything similar.
Do you still have any others, Mary Ann?

I was thinking that these might even make great necklaces if converted, especially since the chunkier beads, etc. look is really in right now.

You got it! I am pretty bad about keeping to my budget...everytime I see something unique, or well carved, or just pretty I bid. Sometimes I get it, sometimes someone wants it more than me. There are items I am willing to bid higher on, because I know soemone here will want it, or because I want it for me, but sometimes there are people who don't have the time to sit all day and see if one comes up for less, so they will simply keep bidding until they win. I have seen items go way higher than normal just because two people want it, and the one who wants it most will get it. I am pretty good at spotting those people and if they look serious when bidding I will just stop. Well, ok, sometimes I throw in a couple extra bids just because I know they will out bid me...is that bad? Sometimes I get lucky, I have a lot of friends at the auction and when they see that I want something they will often not bid, just so it stays low and I can get it! There are times I end up in a bidding war with a friend...but one of us always gives in before it gets too outrageous! It really is fun. I will have to remeber my camera next time so you can all join in the fun with me!
Time to go clean...and play....and then maybe read a little!
Have a great evening everyone!

Are you ready for more, or did I wear you all out last week? I wasn't planning to go today, but my appointment cancelled on me at the last minute and I found myself with a free afternoon. I was supposed to be out making money today and instead I was spending it! I got lots of goodies, a few real bargins, and a couple special items. I will take pictures tomorrow and get them posted...just as soon as I find my cable...hmmm, I think the kids have been in my drawer! Just as a teaser...there are two strands of large pearls, one black and one white that I got for $8 each...I also scored some jade beads and a couple more bangles...yes, I got a lavender one too. There was only one decent jade carving today and it came near the end, and went for over $300. It was another tiger like mine. People really go nuts for them sometimes! So I didn't get any new jade statues, and no pearl pendants either. I did get another long strand of pearls. I will have to sort it all tomorrow and get pics. Have a wonderful day!
