How is this new color kindle better than the color nook??

I'm missing the point of this.

Yes, I know this is a kindle board and I read lots of kindle books but I read them on my (rooted) Nook Color. 

What I specifically like about the rooted Nook is that I'm not tied to any one company.  I wonder if the new color kindle will allow that same flexibility or will you be forced to use Amazon for everything??

And the (apparent??) lack of an sd card slot (which the nook has) is a distinct drawback (IMHO).

Since we don't yet even know if there is going to be a colour Kindle, let alone what it's specifications might be, there's really no way to answer your question.

I remember some time ago hearing that a color e-ink was being developed.  I'm hoping that it has been fully developed and that Amazon will use it to manufacture a color Kindle (my husband can use it to read textbooks with charts and graphs.)

If e-ink is not yet marketable, I'm assuming Amazon will just be coming out with a tablet to rival the other tablets on the market like the Galaxy and the Playbook (and the Nook Color which I consider to be a tablet, not an e-reader), or two tablets, one smaller and one larger, which is what I've heard.  Of course, you will be able to read your Kindle books on the tablets, but it will be like reading a Kindle book on your laptop: backlit, with glare and the light source shining directly into your eyes (obviously, not my cup of tea).  

Having said that, I can't wait to see the tablets!  My laptop is too cumbersome to use in a reclining position, and I'm looking forward to playing games while lying on the sofa or in bed!

I think the OP is referring to the supposed hands on experience by the bozo at techcrunch, or whatever his website is. He made a lot of unsubstantiated claims including that he had a hands on experience of the new 7" Amazon tablet running Android with a hybrid UI, with the blessing of Amazon, but he provided no photos. No one else apparently was allowed a hands on experience. That and the fact that he continuously makes statements like "I believe" such and such is the case, suggests to me he isn't being truthful. He says he couldn't tell how much memory the device had nor could he remember seeing a memory card slot. WT Bleep, he had the thing in his hands and he couldn't figure that out? Yeah right! My bent is the whole article should be considered a hoax unless other credible sources come around.

If this is what the OP refers to, then that is definitely not a Kindle. It is supposed to be referring to a hybrid Android tablet much like the NookColor. At any rate I doubt the guy at techcrunch is being truthful.

That would be awesome. If not, though, at least you could switch to a backlit for low lighting times and an e-ink display for outside. I love my iPad for inside reading, but the Kindle works better when I'm out and about and want to read in the car, or by the lake. I can't wait until color e-ink is fully developed....and they deploy it on cell phones. I can't read my smartphone display in the sunlight, so I'm forever calling the wrong person.

I wonder how many devices I'm going to own by this time next year?

My phone is friggin' useless in the direct sunlight, and even open shade. I hate it. I use it for one thing: to make phone calls. An e-ink dumbphone for Luddites like me would be the ticket.

As for the Amazon Kindle Color Tablet Ereader Thingy, I'm not excited yet. I'll wait until some real info comes out. I'm still looking for some reason to want a tablet computer.

Calling it a tablet is a bit of a misnomer though, the suggestion is it's basically a colour Kindle, with links to Amazon's books, music (US-only) and movies (US-only).

If you like reading books I think you'll probably just stick to the current e-ink Kindle, which I don't think this replaces.  I think this is Amazon's plan to push their other media services (they recently bough Lovefilm in the UK) in the same way the original Kindle pushed ebooks.

And then there's this alarmist article from AppleInsider (based on the techcrunch article) saying flat-out that Amazon is abandoning eInk and will replace it with a tablet.

Now, AppleInsider is an Apple apologist web-site, so it would be in their perverse interest to start creating panic among rivals.  There's nothing to suggest that there is any truth to these claims.  I would find it hard to believe that Amazon and Bezos would abandon eInk, considering how well they've managed to establish the Kindle as the industry leader for eInk and how well they've differentiated it from the iPad.  (And Amazon knows that people don't read books on the iPad.)

Well, there's Amazon's customer service.  That's a huge plus for me.

You probably won't be totally tied to Amazon for reading content, because there's already a Kobo app in Amazon's Android Appstore, which I'd assume you could put on the (alleged) Amazon tablet.  And you don't have to root it to put apps on it - you can get them from the Appstore.  There's also an Audible app for listening to Audible books.

Just because the guy didn't see a slot for extra memory doesn't mean there isn't one - it might be hidden behind the back cover, like the SD card was on the original Kindle.  But as he pointed out, a lot of what you'd need extra memory for, like music or movies, will be accessed from the Amazon Cloud rather than stored on the unit.

He may be a bozo.  On the other hand, lots of folks said the same thing about Boy Genius a couple of years ago when he had the "leaked" pics of the K2.  They said it right up until the K2 was announced and surprise!   It looked a WHOLE lot like those pics he'd had.  

The guy at techcrunch said he had the unit in his hands for about an hour.  There was a lot of detail about how it looks and works (as it is now - it isn't the end product, still a test unit), even if it isn't all the info we'd like to have.  He either has really vivid dreams and remembers them remarkably well, or he had one in his hands.  With all the "leaking" going on late this week, I find it fully believable that someone at Amazon said "Hey, let's let out a little info on this thing."  

Or maybe the guy hurt his back and was taking some really awesome painkillers....

What kind of phone do you have? My iPhone is fine in open shade - difficult to read in direct sunlight but not "useless". Of course here in England we rarely see the sun anyway.

As for the Amazon tablet - I have no interest in it. We already have an iPad and I don't have strong desire for another tablet. And since I mainly use it only to FaceTime with my family back home and Android doesn't have FaceTime, I have even less desire for an Android tablet (my husband gets a lot more use out of the iPad but since I don't, we don't need more than one).

I'm more interested in what the Kindle e-ink touch screen will be like. As long as they keep the side buttons too, I'll probably upgrade.

The color eink they showed is much better than the colored eink I have seen in the past.  The only thing I saw that I didn't like was the device switching to a blank page in between each colored page.  If that is something that needs to happen in order for the color to work, then I don't see people buying it quite yet.

If Amazon is coming out with a tablet-type device (and heaven knows there have been rumors that they are), then of COURSE they're going to leak hints about it. I mean... come on. It's all marketing. I expect to see further leaks on it, too.

Whether this particular leak was accurate is open to question but he came across pretty well to me. As for the Apple fanboi article, I can just SEE Amazon leaking plans to him. NOT!

Well there's the excellent Amazon customer service that is a big plus.  Beyond that it just comes down to whether the hardware is better than the Nook Color or not.

Amazon isn't great at hardware design IMO.  Not terrible, but I always liked they Sony Reader's better hardware wise.  That said, the Nook color is a pretty flimsy and odd looking tablet as well IMO, so Amazon could do better.  I don't see them making something that can challenge the iPad 2 hardware wise though.  As much as I dislike a lot of things about Apple, they do great hardware designs.

As of right now, we can only speculate.  I imagine that the specs may be a little beefier than what the Nook Color offers.  If it's just as easily root-able as the NC, I see it as being a worthy upgrade (assuming it's got higher specs and the price is right).

The key isn't how much better the (supposed) color Kindle is than the Nook, but how much better than it is than the Nook 2.  My understanding is that the Nook 2 has been officially acknowledged, though not announced, by B&N.  As for the reliability of the story about a new color Kindle, I'm not sure.  My instinct is to say that this is specific enough that it is probably correct or mostly correct.  BUT....If the device is so heavily cloud-dependent as it is reported to be, I'm mystified that the plan is only to release a wifi version.  Having wifi and only 6 gig of storage (as reported) really ties use of the device down to home or places with wifi.

I wouldn't be surprised if the information is largely correct, though as mentioned I do think it likely that some sort of 3G wireless connection will end up being included as an option at the very least.
