Please.

I am reading about upgrades and not being able to do them if you have a hack installed. First of all how do you KNOW there is an upgrade available?
Do they send you something via kindle? Will I get it if whispernet is turned off mostly? (i only turn it on to receive a book I ordered)
Also, if there is one available, can I uninstall the screensaver hack to then install the upgrade, and then reinstall the hack afterwards and all will work again? Huh Tongue

So confusing. Sorry if this has been discussed. Still a newbie! Undecided

TIA

Amazon does announce updates, but, honestly, if you frequent the Boards here you'll probably hear it here first.  They have also posted announcements in the Kindle Discussion pages on Amazon.

To know whether you have it, go to your home page, press the menu key, and settings.  At the bottom it will say what version you have.  The most recent version is 2.3. (*)  If it says that, you're good: nothing to worry about.

If it does NOT say that, you have two choices, leave whispernet on as much as you can  -- overnight with the unit plugged in is a good option -- or go to the Amazon Kindle support page and download it manually.  It's been quite a while since the update was originally announced so I wouldn't be surprised if they're not broadcasting it as often any more.  But the manual update process is really easy.

If you have a hack installed, you must first uninstall it.  To do that, you'll need the uninstall file. . .there's a thread or three in Tips, Tricks, and Troubleshooting that has links to where you can find it online if you did not save it to your computer when you installed the hack in the first place.  You must use the uninstall file appropriate to the hack you have, the correct software version, and the Kindle model you have.

Once you've done that, you can go about getting the update.  You CAN re-install the hack after the update, but you will need different files than the ones you used before.

There are several threads on this topic in Tips, Tricks and Troubleshooting for more information. . . .

*The original Kindle version is 1.2 and will likely not have any further updates.

Thanks so much Ann for your detailed response. I really appreciate it!

I just got my k2i in December so I am assuming I already have the 2.3, however, I will definately check it out to be sure using the menu>settings shortcut you provided.  Smiley

I did save the entire hack file, uninstall included, so I should be good to go! Whew!

I love this forum. Everyone is so friendly and helpful. Thanks again!

You may want to check the version you have.  I also received my Kindle 2 in December, and I just checked to be sure.  I have version 2.2.1.  I guess I need the update.

Yes, sometimes updates get delivered to you much later than they come out, so you might want to learn how to manually update your device.

When we ordered ours just before Christmas, since the upgrade had already been published before we ordered we assumed the unit we would be getting would already have it installed; it did not. I went and did the manual update.

I just did the manual update.  Not too much of a problem.  Do not try to open the download wherever you placed it.  Just copy it and then paste in the Kindle file that the directions direct you to.  The Kindle does the rest.
