Fishing’s Greatest Misadventures presents twenty-six true stories which cover the spectrum from terrifying to comical to downright bizarre. In these pages everyday fishermen, pros, and journalists tell their stories of freak accidents, fishy attacks, pranks, idiotic decisions, eerie or unexplained incidents, and other jaw dropping, adrenalin-pumping calamities. The stories bring to life the strange possibilities that await us once we cast our lines into known and unknown waters.

I got this idea from a discussion group on goodreads .... They're doing a challenge where people get paired up and pick a book for each other to read.  I started thinking it would be fun doing the same thing here since we all have such diverse tastes in books ... it could be fun and we could read something we'd never pick on our own ... and give up a little control at the same time  Grin

(I updated this first post to list the guidelines we came up with in the first few posts in the thread ...)

When signing up:
1. Sign up by Saturday, Jan 30th (gives us a work week to decide)
2. State your preferred genres
3. List any Deal-breakers

Picking a book:
1. You'll get your selectee info on the 1st or 2nd (I'm on the road for work so I want a little wiggle room ... I thought I could publish the list in the thread and PM everyone with details)
2. Pick something that you love and adore and is outside your person's usual genres,
3. and that is no more than $9.99 ...
4. PM them with the book and/or add it to the thread.

Once you get your book,
1.  Initially feel trepidation and a little disappointment that it's really not in your usual genres
2.  Get the sample, discover it's not so bad
3.  Read your book (no cheating)
4.  Come back to the thread often to tell us what you think.  Learn, live, love ...

Sounds like fun.....however there are a few loopholes........prices for one- how much the books would cost [especially if it's a genre the person isn't really interested in] Also whats to stop a person from reading a synopsis online and then posting a response on that?

It does sound like fun.  I probably won't participate this month because of school work, but I'd love to do it over the summer.  I agree that you would probably want to put a price limit on it (probably $9.99).  And maybe make a rule that if it's a book from a series it has to be the first one.

Definitely need some price guidelines. Heck, it shouldn't be too hard to find free books for everyone, but it would probably be a good idea to decide and state up front what the max price should be. (Remember that the higher the price, the more likely people will opt out if the sample does not interest them.)

As far as "cheating", unless there is some prize of any value on the line, I think we can all participate under the honor system here. If a book absolutely repels you after sampling it, then don't buy it, and respond to that effect for the results.

Anyway, I'm willing to give it a go.

I thought about the price thing ... and I was waffling on it.   I was actually thinking lower than $9.99 - like $7 or something, but then some might not mind paying more than that ... but I should just stop talking to myself about it and pick a price point ....

So, guidelines so far  (I've been thinking about it more as well)

Sounds interesting.  Book length sound be part of preferences and deal-breakers.  Not every one is going to want to read a 1000 page tome.

Sounds like fun. I'm in. Would prefer a free of inexpensive book. They are usually out of my genre and I have found a lot that I really enjoy. Will watch this thread for more info.

It does sound like a lot of fun and I am sure getting exposed to some writing other than what one is normally reading will expand one's horizon quite a bit. Not sure I'll have the time to participate right away but this does sound like a really great thing to do.

Out of curiosity, though, since you mentioned you found the idea on Goodreads, are they pulling through with it or is it just an idea being tossed around? I couldn't find the respective thread there.

It's in one of the private discussion groups:  M/M Romance .... but I thought it would be more fun to do it in a multi-genre format.  From all appearances, they've done it more than once already.  Within a single genre would be ok but ....  Smiley

I'll start the sign-up sheet...

Preferred genres:
  • Science Fiction
  • Fantasy
  • Science Fact
  • Military Fiction/History

Deal-breakers:
  • Romance (the genre, not that there may be some romance in the story, but not dominated by it)
  • Anything that assumes one particular religious or political viewpoint is correct
  • Dominated by graphic violence (e.g. your typical "slasher" movie)
  • Dominated by graphic sex

One way to solve the price issue, don't buy another copy of the kbook.  Assuming each partner has already purchased the kbook.  Each partner could deregister their kindles.  Email other person your Kindle serial number.  Other person would register partners Kindle on their account.  And then set up download of kbook.  Once transfer has occurred, deregister partner's Kindle.

Please count me in as well.

My usual genres:
Murder Mysteries
Historical Fiction
Fluffy Romance Novels (Jane Greene, Sophie Kinsella, etc.)
Best Sellers

Deal Breakers:
Political or Scientific Nonfiction
Graphic Violence or Sex (if that is the main point of the book)

I don't think I would be comfortable turning my account number over to someone.  I'll consider whatever the book costs my payment for being included in the game.

Thank you!

This could be interesting

Preferred Genres:
American and Western European history
Science Fiction
Mystery
Historical Fiction

Deal Breakers:
Horror
Romance
Religious themed books - fiction and nonfiction
A huge book. I would like to keep it to less than 10000 locations.  I don't know that I'm willing to commit that much time to something that's iffy for me.
