KB Book of the Day
The Moon in Deep Winter
by Lee Polevoi

$0.99
Kindle Edition published 2008-01-10
Bestseller ranking: 460964

Product Description
This literary thriller revolves around Parker Sloane. When he returns from a dismal foray into third-world cash-smuggling to his childhood home in the woods of New England, it seems he’s seeing his country and his blended stepfamily for the first time—and finding both just as twitchy, desperate, paranoid and unpredictable as the underworld types he thought he’d escaped.

Before he can even unpack, Parker goes head-to-head with his relatives—his tyrannical stepfather, seething younger brother, newly evangelical mother, and his alluring younger half-sister Rita—and with the demons they never exorcised.

Delicately but disastrously, Parker attempts to keep his family from imploding, unaware that they have their own plans for escape. The Moon in Deep Winter combines the dark comedy of the Coen brothers with the doomed lyricism of Denis Johnson, creating an airtight world of homicidal family dysfunction.

I don't really have a preferred genre.

Deal breakers:

Graphic violence (against people or animals) or gore when it is written for shock or entertainment (in other words, I don't mind a detailed medical description of an autopsy, but I don't want to hear about it from the point of view of a serial killer).

Horror novels (no Stephen King, please).

Anything heavily and intolerantly pushing a particular branch of religion.

Coolness.  I have everyone on my list and checking it twice.  After just a lazy Sunday, we are 10 people confirmed to play plus Sem, Cheerio and Dr. Renee  Grin  who are going to give their preferences ....

I'll play Wink though I can't promise I'll finish anything too tedious!

Favorite genres
Fantasy

Deal-breakers
Romance
Horror
Horror/Romance (Twilight Wink)
Overtly Religious (allusion is ok - as in Grapes of Wrath)
>10k locations (unless I'm REALLY intrigued by the pick -- in which case I likely won't finish the book, but will continue into March!)

--
Although fantasy is my favorite genre, I'm generally pretty open. I tend to dislike anything too tedious (e.g. war annals, hard (vice soft) sci-fi, overly Morgensternian books)

I think I'm going to skip this month.  Once treatments start I will probably be staying at my DFs at the lake, and he has a dialup internet connection.  So my internet time will be limited, I'm sure.

I started putting together a list to match us up ... I have to say I'm amused.  There are a lot of Science Fiction, fantasy, history or historical fiction readers in the group (not counting those who don't like those genres, of course).  Likewise, there are quite a few who aren't into Romance, horror or non-fiction - except for those who are into them.

The only thing we all seem to have in common is an aversion to gratuitous sex and violence ...

I'm picking for welshcorgi.

Your book for this month is Rule Britannia by Harry Turtledove.  This is a novel set in an Elizabethan England 10-years after the Spanish Armada defeated the English and Conquered the island.

Your book is A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini.  It is the story of two women living in Afghanistan under Taliban rule.  It is a great story that gave me a glimpse into a way of life that I had known very little about.  I hope you like it too.

Ok geko29, I've chosen Dhampir by Barb and JC Hendee for you. It is the first in a multibook series that was suggested to me by a friend and I really enjoyed it and I hope you do to. It's a little bit of everything on your preferred list, and adds some Scifi in too.

pomlover2586,

The book I've chosen for you is

The Kindle price is $5.59. I know that you had listed that your price point is $5.00, but I couldn't find anything cheaper. Almost everything else I looked for was over $6.00. If this is a problem, just let me know.

This is listed as a Young Adult book, but don't let that put you back (honestly I find that YA fantasy is some of the best, especially since I really hate fantasy that's steeped in politics). It's a fantastic read. I've read this book (and it's two sequels) multiple times and it's just something that's stayed with me. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
