KB Book of the Day
The Moon in Deep Winter
by Lee Polevoi

$0.99
Kindle Edition published 2008-01-10
Bestseller ranking: 460964

Product Description
This literary thriller revolves around Parker Sloane. When he returns from a dismal foray into third-world cash-smuggling to his childhood home in the woods of New England, it seems he’s seeing his country and his blended stepfamily for the first time—and finding both just as twitchy, desperate, paranoid and unpredictable as the underworld types he thought he’d escaped.

Before he can even unpack, Parker goes head-to-head with his relatives—his tyrannical stepfather, seething younger brother, newly evangelical mother, and his alluring younger half-sister Rita—and with the demons they never exorcised.

Delicately but disastrously, Parker attempts to keep his family from imploding, unaware that they have their own plans for escape. The Moon in Deep Winter combines the dark comedy of the Coen brothers with the doomed lyricism of Denis Johnson, creating an airtight world of homicidal family dysfunction.

Afraid I already read that one. Smiley (Maybe our tastes are too much alike for this? Wink ) Feel free to either pick out another one, or just tell me to read Dawkins' book as something I would not have bought on my own.

Note to my future self:  Do not match up Nog and the geko ....  Cheesy  Now I'm even more curious what he comes up next for you ...  I haven't read Mercury Falls and now it's on my TBR list ....

I didn't join in on the game, but I must say this looks like fun.  I am looking forward to everyone posts about the books that were selected for them.

I thought it was a bit inconsistent: parts of it were quite good, but few parts dragged it down from being a strong recommendation for me. I much preferred Good Omens for something along that line, but of course Terry Pratchett was responsible for half of it, or perhaps Only Begotten Daughter by James Morrow for something darker.

I haven't read 'Only Begotten Daughter', but my copy of 'Good Omens' is going to need replacing soon ... it's getting pretty ratty looking.

I've never tried dystopian- well except for 1984......but it sounds like something I can get through. Thanks!

Cheesy I'll be interested to hear what you think! And I'm sorry about the previous suggestion. With your Disney avatar, I assumed fantasy was something that you'd like.

Have you read Oryx and Crake? I have a sample of it waiting on my Kindle, but I was hoping to get a familiar opinion on it. Not to go off on a tangent, but I am just curious since it's another of Atwood's dystopian novels.

All right, I'll make one more go of it, and then fall back to Dawkins.  Try Riptide by Preston/Child:

An unusual treasure-hunt book in that all the fantastic elements have perfectly sound explanations.  Overall just a fun book, nothing terribly serious.

For Lynn:

One for the Money, by Janet Evanovich   ($ 6.39 on Kindle)

Something outside the fantasy/SF field...  If you've read it, please let me know, and I'll pick another.

Haven't read it, have looked at hers before and thought I might try it

Coolness ... More interest for March.  Smiley

I've already enjoyed setting up this group of 18, I'm looking forward to starting my book and I'm curious how conversation will go as the month progresses ....  But I've pretty much already decided I'm doing this again in March.
