I just received notice that the 2010 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award has begun. Note the big change that they are now accepting "previously self-published" novels this time, which is huge news! Doesn't help me, unfortunately, because the fine print says they do NOT accept novels by two or more authors (I wrote Cyberdrome myself, but I included my brother on the copyright and book jacket). Oh well  To be honest, I'm actually quite happy with my "Indie" status and my book is doing pretty well on its own without a fancy-schmancy publishing contract. They would probably make me change my cover art, and I love my cover!  However, for the rest of you authors, here are the details from Amazon: Hello from Amazon.com,

I got a similar email. Great news for us -- get your entries in fast though, they are closing the doors once they get 5000 submissions in each of the two categories. I'm going to submit Never Smile at a Crocodile. I'd submit my newest, the fables, but I have a photographer that I listed with that one so it's out.

I figure what do I have to lose, so I'm going for it. Have to agree it is very tough with everything riding on that 300 word pitch!  |

Despite my pledge to ignore ABNA this year, I went ahead and entered. It was easy, so why not? I spent much less time sweating over the pitch this time. Just a hook, brief synopsis and market placement. I doubt it will make the first cut, but I buy lotto tickets on occasion, too.

I tossed in a quick pitch myself. I'll admit, I am shameless, gutless, and without any morals. I'll take a fancy-shmancy contract. I'll change my book cover art, too. And the title. And my name.
I pity my wife though if I make it through to the next round. Something tells me I'd actually start getting nervous, and I get cranky when I'm nervous. She's so good to me, 'cause I get nervous so easily.
Good luck to all of you who entered. Maybe all our novels can get together for brunch in the top 100 bracket.

Well. There's one word of profanity in my pitch so, if I don't get bounced for that, I'm confident I'll make it to the quarterfinals.
I got murdered by Publisher's Weekly last year but I deserved it. The first half of the book had been re-written recently while the latter half was fifteen years old. The negative reviews reflected the split. Regular reviewers only got to read the first bit after all.
This time the whole book is new but I feel the last chapter is rushed.
We'll see.

I'm in for Clade Josso, but I'm a little nervous about writing the "pitch", because it felt like I was rewriting a description for the book. I'm not too good at the pitch thing.

You realize what this means? A year from now, you'll be entering the ABNA contest and posting on a board somewhere saying, "I entered last year. Early reviewers loved the book, but I got skewered by the Publisher's Weekly review. The last chapter was rushed, and the negative reviews reflected the split. Regular reviewers only got to read the first bit, after all." I kid, and frankly, I'll be thrilled if I can even make it to a PW reviewer, so gratz on making it that far, and hopefully you do so again...with better results and reviews than last time, too! Nah. This book stands a much better chance.
No magic. No scifi. Not written in 1st-person. If the reviewers make it to the end they should be willing to let me polish the last 3000 words.
I'm more confident this year than last.
Provided the profanity doesn't bug too much. Because there's lots.
