The Moon in Deep Winter
by Lee Polevoi

$0.99
Kindle Edition published 2008-01-10
Bestseller ranking: 460964

Product Description
This literary thriller revolves around Parker Sloane. When he returns from a dismal foray into third-world cash-smuggling to his childhood home in the woods of New England, it seems he’s seeing his country and his blended stepfamily for the first time—and finding both just as twitchy, desperate, paranoid and unpredictable as the underworld types he thought he’d escaped.

Before he can even unpack, Parker goes head-to-head with his relatives—his tyrannical stepfather, seething younger brother, newly evangelical mother, and his alluring younger half-sister Rita—and with the demons they never exorcised.

Delicately but disastrously, Parker attempts to keep his family from imploding, unaware that they have their own plans for escape. The Moon in Deep Winter combines the dark comedy of the Coen brothers with the doomed lyricism of Denis Johnson, creating an airtight world of homicidal family dysfunction.

I just finished Greg Banks' Scairy Tales: 13 Tantalizing Tales of Terror, a collection of short stories for $1.99. It's a marvelous collection for horror, dark fantasy, and sci-fi fans.

Look Me In the Eye: My Life with Aspergers by John Elder Robison was a very good memoir by Augusten Burroughs' older brother.  He really has a very good outlook considering all of the hurdles he has overcome.  And I learned quite a bit about autism and Asperger's - something I knew very little about prior to reading this.

I just finished "Water For Elephants: A Novel." Loved it!!

After reading all your great suggestions, I think I am going to read "The Help" next. I accidently downloaded the first night I got my Kindle (trying to download a sample), but I went ahead and kept it. Looking forward to it!

I haven't read this, but the author was interviewed tonight on the NewsHour on PBS and it sounds very interesting:

I heard an interview with the author recently, and her research sounded interesting, so I decided to read the book.  It was a light, easy read, but full of candor, humor, and insight into the world of dating.

Right before I read Hotel on the Corner, I read this book. It also was very good.

I also read The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (again, amazing and a childs perspective of WWII)

The Match by Mark Frost. It's about a lot more than golf: friendship, disappointment and redemption.

A Verdict for Love http://www.amazon.com/A-Verdict-for-Love-ebook/dp/B003980Y60/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&m=AG56TWVU5XWC2&s=digital-text&qid=1266930882&sr=1-1

This is a work of lesbian romantica which features strong writing, excellent characterization and a really lovely storyline. I would include the cover here, but it might not sit well with the "family friendly" quality of the site.

I've recently finished Mercury Falls by Robert Kroese. It's a hilarious and utterly irreverent story of an angel who is ambivalent about his role in the coming apocalypse. His writing and humor fall somewhere between Kurt Vonnegut and Douglas Adams. Great stuff.
