Its time to start looking forward to March so now is the time to start the sign-up for the Quasi-Official March Book Reading Game.   Sign up will occur here and will run from Today until Friday, Feb. 26th.

Here are the game guidelines:

When signing up:
1. Sign up by Saturday, Feb 27th
2. State your preferred genres
3. List any Deal-breakers (genres, cost, size, etc.)
3.5  If you want to use last month's information (instead of typing it again), just let me know ....  Grin
4. Be filled with anticipation and a little dread

Picking a book:
1. You'll get your selectee's name in a separate thread.
2. Pick a book you love and adore, is outside your person's usual genres, is not a Deal breaker,
3. and that is no more than $9.99 ...
3.5 Add a backup book if you want
4. Let everyone know your selection by adding it to the thread.

Once you get your book:
1. Be surprised at the choice and maybe feel a little unsure about it ...
2. Get the sample, discover it's not so bad
3. Read your book (no cheating)
4. Come back to the thread often to tell us what you think.
5. Learn, live, love ...

I am fairly new to KB but would like to join in.  Not sure of the "genre" thing.  I get fiction and nonfiction.  Though I read mostly fiction, I have read some nonfiction that I have thoroughly enjoyed.  But.... I have read romance, mystery, suspense, dog stories (what genre is that?), historical fiction, etc.  Is there some kind of "list of genres" where I can just review and check off those things I know I would be interested in reading and those that I would not?

This is by no means a complete list.  I took the book categories from the kindle book store page and pulled a sampling:

Action & Adventure
Anthologies
Children's Fiction
Comic Fiction
Comics & Graphic Novels
Contemporary Fiction
Drama
Erotica
Fairy Tales
Family Saga
Fantasy
Fiction
Fiction Classics
Gay & Lesbian
General
Historical
Historical Fiction
Horror
Literary Fiction
Men's Adventure
Movie Tie-Ins
Mystery & Thrillers
Poetry
Political
Religious Fiction
Romance
Science Fiction
Sea Adventures
Short Stories
Sports
War
Westerns
World Literature

I suggest, for a fuller list, to just click through the book groups that interest you on the Amazon pages to see sub-categories come up ...

Thank you Geoffrey.   I did not even think about going to Amazon, since I never searched for books in that way.

I will use Geoffrey's list as my start off point.  Checking for other subcategories would make things way too complicated.  I may check them out later for future months, however.  Let's see how this one goes first!

So......

Preferences in genres:
Contemporary Fiction
Drama
Family Saga

Deal-breakers:
Religious Fiction
Political
War

I didn't play last month because I am generally not good with "assigned" reading. But, I followed the thread and it looks like everyone had fun (and there weren't too many duds in the books selected) so I am willing to give this a try this time. With that said...

Preferred genres:

Historical fiction (all types, including military)
Contemporary m/m romance (not m/f)
Non-fiction for subjects I am interested in

Deal breakers:

Science fiction
Horror
Stephen King
Vampires
anything ultra-violent
Christian fiction

The more I read the game guidelines the more this sounds fun.  I have not yet read the previous month's posts.  I will be away for more than a week but returning late on 2/27.  Will look forward to reading all of the preferences, getting my assignment and getting started.

I did not play last month as I am not good at picking books for others. Also, I listen to a lot of audio books checked out of the library by DH that are: reported as damaged, new, just been checked in, something he likes, or something he thinks I might like. As a result, I frequently listen to books outside my normal comfort zone. Therefore I have sorted my Comfort Zone in approximate order of number of books read.

Comfort Zone:
  • Science Fiction
  • Mystery
  • Fantasy
  • Historical
  • Scientific Nonfiction
  • Biography

Deal Breakers:
  • Political or Religious - if intended to convert or intolerant of other viewpoints
  • Gratuitous graphic violence

I'm in and am looking forward to it.

Comfort Zone:
historical fiction
chick lit
family saga
drama
suspense
thrillers
religion is OK if it is presented culturally, not to convert.
I don't usually go for fantasy, but if written well, I will be willing to try it.

Deal Breakers:
science fiction
horror
NO vampires (even if it is a love story)
romance

I'm in!

Comfort zone:

Literary fiction
Gothic horror and spookiness -- I love a good ghost story and things like Patrick McGrath
That amorphous genre they call "narrative nonfiction" -- basically, true books that tell a story a la Devil in the White City
Popular science for ignoramuses
Popular history

Total Deal-breakers:

"inspirational" fiction or nonfiction
Anything really badly written and/or formulaic -- yep, I'm a snob
Conspiracy theories and political screeds
Chick-lit, unless it's extremely well done

My person should feel free to push me out of my comfort zone, but please have mercy and don't ask me to read, say, Nicholas Sparks (unless he's a waaaaay better novelist than I assume he is ...). I'm fine with sex and violence if they aren't gratuitous and have a reason to be in the book.

Preferred Genres:
  • Religious (I'm happily saved.)
  • Comedy
  • Romance
  • Southern Lit
  • Self-help
  • Inspirational (such as Chicken Soup for the Soul, Joni Eareckson Tada's life story, people successfully dealing with life issues such as death, divorce, illness, etc)
  • Nicholas Sparks
  • Little House on the Prairie series (Yes, I love sap.)

    Deal Breakers:
    • Extreme Horror (a little spooky okay)
    • Anything intolerant of faith or ridiculing Christians
    • Liberal politics
    • Deviant sexual behavior (Pedophilia and basically anything else illegal...)
    • Anything that only a Professor of Literature would be forced to read to complete a degree.  Most classics would be fine.

    Additional Notes:
    • Under 10k locations preferred, but willing to compromise for that special book....  Wink
    • Price doesn't really matter.......
