Recently purchased my wife a DX as a retirement present.  She has already downloaded about 20 books for our upcoming trip to St Maarten.  I was amazed when I turned my Itouch on to find all 20 books she had downloaded were also on my Kindle App in the Itouch.

I've figured out how to turn off sync (thanks to this board) so that we can both read the same book at the same time.  She has the Global version of the DX.  We will have internet service while in St Maarten but I'm not sure if the whispernet will work while we are there.  I was thinking about ordering the USA Today but if I'm not going to be able to get it downloaded it wouldn't make any sense.  Is there a way to download it to my computer and then transfer it to the Kindle and my Itouch?

Thanks for the help and what a great site this is.

Congrats to your wife on her new Kindle Smiley  To answer your question, yes, you can download a newspaper to your computer and transfer it to the Kindle with the USB.  However, you can't download one paper to two devices - you'll have to buy one for each.  I don't think you can transfer books to the iPod via USB anyway, though.

In addition, take note...

If you have the global edition of the Kindle, the wireless should work outside of the US as long as the country you are visiting is on the Amazon's list of wireless countries.

There is an extra charge if you download via the wireless while outside the country.  You can avoid the charge if you download via USB to your PC and then transfer it to the kindle.

Only kindle books are available on the iPod Touch app.  You can not get periodicals.  (This is unfortunate especially when you are in a place that provides free wifi)

Enjoy your trip!

Thanks for both of your reply's.  It's a shame about the periodicals but only a very minor one.

HI and welcome!  I'm now here myself.

Out of curiosity - were the books that showed up on your iPod purchased from Amazon -- ie. copy protected?   I've been led to believe that such books can't be copied or moved from one machine to another - we don't have WhisperNet in NZ so I had hoped to download Amazon books to my "Kindle for PC" and migrate them over to my Kindle with the USB cable.  I worked fine for the Public Domain books that I have, and it worked fine for the demo copy of the $9.00 book I was hoping to buy from Amazon, but I haven't tried it on a real live purchased book as yet.

If it worked on your Ipod, perhaps I can find a way to get it work for me down here.

Techbot boy, if you DL them for Kindle for PC that is what they will work on, If you dl to PC for your KINDLE it will work, alot of people who were outside of the whispernet range here in the states with K1 used to do that ALOT. Because you can read your books on mutiple devices on your account, you can read on 2 or more at the same time, but they are still DRM protected. and only good on the specified device you DL them for.

TechBotBoy's Kindle is unregistered and therefore this will not work.  Otherwise, we could all deregister our Kindles and send our DRM ebook files to each other and it would work on all our Kindles.  It does not.  Your Kindle ebooks will only work on the devices registered to your account.  No devices registered = no Amazon Kindle books.

Thanks everyone for your welcome and well wishes on our trip.  Although the French side is known for their gastronomical delight, I personally prefer the Dutch side.  Too much rich food doesn't settle well in this old man.  We have found many and many of great places to eat on the Dutch side.  This will only be our third trip but it has quickly turned into one of our favorite vacation spots in the world.

I guess when I downloaded the IPod Kindle App it basically registered my device automatically.  I swear I didn't register it anyway else, I think!

Here's a little blurb from the "Manage Kindle" section on Amazon.com:

Read Kindle books -- no Kindle required

    * Don't own a Kindle? Read Kindle books and shop in the Kindle Store from your iPhone, PC, or BlackBerry
    * Already own a Kindle? Access your Kindle books even if you don't have your Kindle with you
    * Get the best reading experience available for your iPhone, Windows PC, or BlackBerry
    * Automatically synchronizes your last page read and annotations between devices with Whispersync
    * Adjust the text size, add bookmarks, and view the annotations you created on your Kindle

When I go to the Manage Kindle section and look at the books we've bought it gives me three options for delievery:

  Deliver to:  Kindle
                   Ipod
                   or Transfer via computer

Hope this helps those with questions.

Wish we could take you with us.  I know very well the weather you're talking about.  We are also from NC.  The Raleigh area.  The good news is that it's suppose to be in the 60's here starting Sunday, the day we leave, darn. LOL.
